Dr. Edward N. Larter, Professor Emeritus, formerly of the Department of Plant Science of the Faculty of Agricultural and Food Sciences, died on May 8, 2023, at the age of 100. Dr. Larter came to the U of M from the University of Saskatchewan to be the Rosner Chair in Triticale Development in 1966, retiring in 1989. Ed was a plant breeder and geneticist working on many crops including triticale, wheat and maize and was the section head of the breeding and genetics section within the department. Dr. Larter was essential to the development of triticale at the University of Manitoba. He was the breeder of Welsh, Rosner and Banjo triticale.

Ed loved music and could often be found playing in ‘bands’ with others within the faculty. Dr. Terry Galloway, Professor Emeritus of the Department of Entomology indicated that Ed was still playing music until very recently. We extend our condolences to Ed’s family. Dr. Larter’s funeral will be on Thursday, May 18, 2023, at 10:00 AM at Thomson in the Park, 1291 McGillivray Blvd.

The University of Manitoba campuses are located on original lands of Anishinaabe, Cree, Oji-Cree, Dakota and Dene peoples, and on the homeland of the Métis Nation. I respect the Treaties that were made on these territories, acknowledge the harms and mistakes of the past, and dedicate myself to move forward in partnership with Indigenous communities in a spirit of reconciliation and collaboration.
