New Roots available: 21.1 Conservation Prioritisation


The latest issue of BGCI’s education journal Roots focuses on conservation prioritisation and how we can engage our visitors with this important topic. In 2024 BGCI will have completed a ground-breaking project to assess the extinction risk of all the world’s tree species– the Global Tree Assessment. This is a global effort with hundreds of partners contributing to this work and being supported by BGCI. But what are we doing with this information? Is there an opportunity to engage our visitors with this important area of our work and if so how do we go about it?

Global Botanic Garden Fund (GBGF) still open

The GBGF  is made up of a number of grants which aim to drive plant conservation. Grants and criteria vary, all projects to be delivered within one year. To help with the application process you can see our recorded webinar here and a short video of our impact in 2023 here. Deadline for applications is the 14th June. 
 

 

BigGive #GreenMatchFund: Tackling the Illegal Plant Trade

A huge thank you to all who donated to our recent fundraising campaign which ran via the BigGive platform from the 18th-25th April. Together, we were able to raise over £20,000 to help tackle the illegal plant trade. 
 

 

GlobalTree Portal Updates - new visualisations & KBA data available

The GlobalTree Portal has been updated with new data on threat status and current conservation actions for tree species. 
 

 

New paper released about BGCI's Conservation Action Tracker

A new paper has been released titled "Conservation Action Tracker: A tool to identify and monitor conservation actions for tree species" has now been published.

We are delighted that His Majesty King Charles has retained his Patronage of Botanic Gardens Conservation International. 

 

 

The Global Conservation Consortium for Conifers (GCCC) launches! 

We are so pleased to announce the launch of the Global Conservation Consortium for Conifers (GCCC) with a ceremonial planting at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE).

 

 

Conservation Gap Analysis of Threatened Conifers

Botanic Gardens Conservation International (BGCI), in collaboration with Bedgebury National Pinetum and Forest (Forestry England), is conducting a global conservation gap analysis of threatened conifers.

 

 

BGCI Evaluation & Impact Assessment of Botanic Gardens

Your responses will help us better understand how botanic gardens evaluate and measure the impact of their programs and improve future efforts in public engagement and education.

The BGCI Accreditation Scheme distinguishes botanic gardens from non-botanic gardens and recognises achievements in plant conservation. It is aimed at botanical institutions wishing to establish their credentials. Organisations applying for accreditation will be assessed on criteria encompassing leadership, collections management, horticulture, public education, community/cultural activities, conservation actions, scientific research, staff, networking, and sustainability.
