MSC and PHD Positions to Study and Improve Winterhardiness and Health
    Components in Asparagus

One PHD and two MSC positions are available with a preferred starting date of
January 2011. The PHD project will examine physiological parameters in genetic
materials that vary for senescence, dormancy and survivorship in Southern Ontario to
establish selection criteria for breeding winterhardiness in asparagus. In a related
project, an MSC student will assess physiological parameters in breeding parents and
their hybrids to determine the genetic potential to improve this trait. A second,
distinct MSC project will survey breeding parents and hybrids for antioxidants and
other health-related compounds to assess genetic variation and the potential to
improve asparagus as a healthy food.

The University of Guelph has one of the largest concentrations of plants scientists in
Canada with research spanning basic and applied/agricultural objectives.
Opportunities exist to integrate these objectives in degree programs and interact with
commodity organizations to understand the food value-chain. In the Department of
Plant Agriculture, graduate degrees are offered in three areas of specialization to meet
student needs: Plant Genetics and Breeding, Plant Physiology and Biochemistry and
    Crop Production Systems.
