Good afternoon everyone!
On September 9th, the Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) introduced us all to their new name: L’offis Wiichihihwahk.
L’offis Wiichihihwahk is a Michif name gifted to our office by Elder Charlotte Nolin with the support of Michif language keeper, Verna DeMontigny.
The name means “the office that helps.” It speaks to helping and supporting one another and reflects the importance of relationships and shared responsibility.
More than a new name, L’offis Wiichihihwahk – Office of the Vice-President (Indigenous) reflects how we strive to move forward together as a community. It is also part of the growing
effort across UM to ensure Indigenous names and languages are visible, spoken and honoured throughout our campuses. By learning and using these names, we help create a university community that recognizes and respects Indigenous languages, cultures, Knowledges
and Ways of Being.
With tomorrow, September 30th, being Truth and Reconciliation Day, you may be wondering how to properly pronounce the new name?
Here are a couple of resources to help you learn the proper pronunciation, so that we can all go forward honouring the beautiful gift that is the new Michif name.
