Subject: Publication of the Defence Industrial Strategy
|
Caution! This message was sent from outside the University of Manitoba. |
Dear RC Members,
The federal government has just announced its long-awaited Defence Industrial Strategy. Attached is a short document with summary analysis of relevant components, along with a set of key messages.
The strategy includes clear recognition of the role of research in Canada’s defence and security ecosystem. Notably, it formalizes the working group we assembled last fall, which will now operate as the Science and Research Defence Advisory Council. The government is also signalling an ambition to increase defence-related R&D investment by 85% over time.
Overall, the document gives concrete policy expression to the Prime Minister’s remarks in Davos, emphasizing the need for Canada to build sovereign capabilities more deliberately amid heightened geopolitical risk and technological competition.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions - I look forward to seeing everyone later today.
Best,
