For those of you who are unfamiliar with this prestigious award, it is perhaps most comparable to the Tri-Agency Vanier award, in that it seeks to support academics and researchers who show strong leadership skills in various community and work settings; additionally, the Trudeau Scholarship also seeks to encourage the development of public intellectuals - the movers and shakers who will shape social conversations and movements in the public, non-profit, and private sectors. As per the Trudeau Foundation's website, the intent of this doctoral scholarship is to support "courageous, bold, original thinkers" who have held extensive leadership roles in their communities, and who seek to extend their research "beyond academia, to partner and work with a diversity of actors across society, and to help address some of the most pressing domestic and global issues of direct relevance for the future of Canada." This is a three-year funding program that will require award recipients to attend, participate and organize several international conferences, in addition to collaborating on a creative project that will showcase the knowledge aquired over the duration of the award and to stimulate public dialogue. ------------------------------- The Soil Fertility and Nutrient Management Lab in the Plant Science Department at Penn State has an opening for a PhD level graduate student in Agronomy starting in the 2020-21 academic year. The student will conduct research to test and refine a new nitrogen recommendation system that credits N supply from mineralization of cover crop residues and soil organic matter. The student will also contribute to the advancement of a process-based cropping system model by developing and testing algorithms controlling N mineralization and crop yield response to N stress. The student will be advised by Dr. Charlie White. Please see the attached announcement for more details and desired qualifications. Dr. White will be at the Tri-Society meetings in San Antonio and can schedule a meeting with qualified applicants to discuss the position.
