The Power & Resistance in Latin America Cluster Presents: The Politics of Agricultural Cooperativism in Brazil: A Case Study of the Landless Rural Worker Movement (MST) by Wilder Robles(Rural Development, Brandon University)
Friday, January 26th, from 2:30 PM to 4:30 PM in room 409 Tier
This presentation examines peasant-led agricultural cooperative formation in Brazil from a political economy perspective. It takes as a point of reference the Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra, or Landless Rural Workers Movement (MST). The paper identifies the MST’s main periods of cooperative formation within their particular contexts. Each of these periods oriented and, eventually, reoriented the MST’s overall cooperative efforts. Despite these achievements, the long-term sustainability of this cooperative project depends significantly on the MST’s capacity to overcome structural barriers and, most importantly, obtain long-term support from state and non-state actors. Join the UM History, Political Studies, Institute for the Humanities with the J.W Dafoe Foundation, Duff Roblin Professor of Government, Peace and Conflict Studies for this inaugural panel. Panel one will begin at 10:00 AM sharp. It will feature perspectives from Dr. James Fergusson (Senior Scholar at U of Manitoba), Dr. Thomas Hughes (Postdoctoral Fellow at Mount Allison University), Dr. Ben Zyla (Visiting Scholar in the Department of Government at Harvard University), and Maj (ret) Paula Thorne (Ph.D. Student in Peace and Conflict Studies). Panel two features perspectives from Dr. Anessa Kimball (University of Laval), Dr. Alexander Lanoszka (Associate Professor of International Relations, University of Waterloo), U.S. Political Officer Jennifer Tierney, and Mr. Nicholas Gelsby (PhD candidate, Trent University).
