The Women’s Health Research Foundation of Canada (WHRFC) are holding our annual fundraising gala “Dance for Your Health Gala 2026: Latin Style!” on Wednesday, April 29 at the Caboto Centre.

The proceeds from this event will allow us to fully endow a FOURTH scholarship for graduate students at the University of Manitoba who are investigating any aspect of the health of women and gender diverse people. These scholarships are how I met Courtney Marshall (WISDOM), as she was one of the recipients last year who presented at the Gala.

While this is a fundraiser for the health of women and gender diverse people, it is absolutely welcoming of male/gender diverse guests! (Ian had a blast the past couple of years, and will be attending again this year!)

This year marks our 9^th Dance For Your Health which helps support scholarships focused on health research for women and gender-diverse people. Every year, our scholarship winners present their research projects in three-minutes. These awards help to fill funding gaps in women’s health research and encourage students to develop a career in this much needed field.

Since 1992, we have awarded over 70 scholarships to students at the University of Manitoba. This year, our fundraising goal is to endow a fourth full-time graduate student scholarship.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER ANNOUNCEMENT

Renée El-Gabalawy, PhD

Renée El-Gabalawy is an associate professor in the departments of clinical health psychology and anesthesiology, perioperative and pain medicine in the Max Rady College of Medicine at the University of Manitoba (UM).

She holds adjunct appointments in the Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology (Fort Garry), and is an adjunct scientist at CancerCare Manitoba. She is also a clinical psychologist for Shared Health with a specialization in health psychology. Her practice focuses on medical trauma. Dr. El-Gabalawy is the Director of the multidisciplinary Health, Anxiety and Trauma Laboratory (HATLab). She supervises undergraduate and graduate students, BSc(Med) students, and medical residents.

Dr. Renée El-Gabalawy is also a recent CBC Future 40 2025 winner.
