Dear faculty, staff and students at the University of Manitoba, Today, November 15, we celebrate National Philanthropy Day (NPD) across the country. This annual event began in the United States in 1986 as special day to honour the impact of people who give generously to support causes that are important to them or volunteer their time to make a difference in their community. Earlier this month, thegovernment of Canada passed a new bill to permanently establish November 15 as National Philanthropy Day in our country. At the University of Manitoba, we are thankful to our faculty, staff and students for their contributions. In countless ways, your generosity has made a positive impact on our university, our community and our world. All over the world, celebrations are being held to honour philanthropists and volunteers who make a difference in their communities. The Association of Fundraising Professionals, Manitoba Chapter will be recognizing a number of people who are committed to improving life in our province. Among them are two of our graduates: John Prystanski (BA/88, JD/12) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Volunteer Fundraiser and Mark Evans (BCSc [Hons]/84), MSc/86, PhD/88) is being honoured for his work as an Outstanding Philanthropist. These are just two members of the University of Manitoba community who volunteer their time and their talents to make our neighbourhoods and workplaces better places to live and to work. Our world is better because individuals and groups care enough to make a difference. Thank you for your support of our university and our wider community.
