BULLETIN #1: New Terms, Subject Codes and Catalog Searches

The self-service area of Aurora Student will be available July 4, and through it, you will be able to access and update personal information, register for courses, and obtain fee statements, grades and more. Watch for more information on the Registrar’s Office website later this month.

The online Calendar (rules, regulations and program requirements), the Course Catalog (course descriptions) and the Class Schedule (course times and locations) are currently available through umanitoba.ca. Use the Calendar to learn about rules, regulations and program information. The Class Schedule is at the moment ‘preliminary’. Most courses are now entered on the schedule. Additional information, such as section comments, will be entered by the end of June.

What’s New

New Term Structure Starting this September, Regular Session for most students will be split into two Terms: Fall 2006 and Winter 2007. When you register, or search for classes in the Course Catalog or Class Schedule, you’ll need to search each Term (in which you want to take courses) in order to see the complete course offerings.

For example, if you’re a Science student and want to see what’s available in September, select ‘Fall 2006’. If you want to see what’s available in January, select ‘Winter 2007’. If you’re a Dentistry student, select ‘Bannatyne Undergrad 2006-2007’.

New Subject Codes in Course Numbers Courses in Aurora Student are identified with a subject code, not a department number. For example, 017.120 is now PSYC 1200. This means you will need a subject code for each of your Catalog and Schedule searches. The drop down menus on the online Course Catalog and Class Schedule include the names of the Subject areas, so you won‘t need to know the codes, but because some departments have divided their courses into several subjects, you may need assistance in identifying the subject area you want. For example, the department of French, Spanish and Italian (044) now offer their courses as French (FREN), Spanish (SPAN), or Italian (ITAL). A complete list of Subject areas, organized by faculty and department, and also offered alphabetically is available on the Calendar main page.

Hint: If you would like to search for courses in more than one subject at once, while searching the Course Catalog or the Class Schedule, press and hold the Control or Command key while selecting subjects you wish to include in your search.

New Ways to Search the Course Catalog and Class Schedule The main change you will see in the online Catalog and Schedule will be the course search tools: * If you want to see course descriptions, search the Aurora Course Catalog. * If you want to see the course offering for the coming year, search the Aurora Class Schedule. Note: Although the Catalog and Schedule went live on the web in early May 2006, they are still in development. You will see changes to these functions over the next month that will improve ease of navigation.

Searching the Course Catalog 1. Select the Term you want to search. 2. Select a Subject Area (and any other option you want to include in your search). Notes: - Courses displayed in search results may include courses offered in Fall 2006 AND Winter 2007. - Only courses which are offered during the Term you selected will have an active web link to the Class Schedule. If you want to see courses in another Term, you’ll need to perform another search using that Term. - You MUST include a Subject in each search.

Searching the Class Schedule 1. Select the Term you want to search. 2. Select a Subject Area (and any other parameter you want to search). Note: - Terms in Schedule are currently marked ‘view only’. Once your registration period starts, you will be able to select courses and register through the schedule. - Only courses offered in the Term you selected will be displayed. - You MUST include a Subject in each search.
