Mr. Otellini [Intel's new CEO] ran down a series of hardware-based
steps designed to improve security, articulating a vision of
"virtualization" technology that keeps a virtual machine built into a
PC isolated, and thus safer from attack, hardens that machine against
hazards, and provides for remote repair after an attack.
But asked when such solutions would be available to mainstream users
and usable by them, Mr. Otellini said "I think we're still a few
years away." The problem can't be solved by hardware alone, he noted
-- hardware solutions take years to be adopted, and remote recovery
of a PC, for example, will require service providers to offer that.
Pressed about security by Mr. Mossberg [of the Wall Street Journal],
Mr. Otellini had a startling confession: He spends an hour a weekend
removing spyware from his daughter's computer. And when further
pressed about whether a mainstream computer user in search of
immediate safety from security woes [...] he said, "If you want to
fix it tomorrow, maybe you should buy something else."
[...]
Ms. Cox also noted how blogs themselves are changing, observing that
more-political blogs that have served as watchdogs on the mainstream
media now look more like that segment of the media themselves:
"They're cliqueish, they're arrogant, they get things wrong." As an
example, she cited the Power Line blog (www.powerlineblog.com), whose
investigations helped debunk the now-notorious CBS memo about
President Bush's National Guard service, but which then got "memo-
happy" in the case of the Republican strategy memo on Terri Schiavo,
decrying it as a fake. GOP Sen. Mel Martinez later said an aide had
written the Schiavo talking points.

...iTunes 4.9, which Mr. Jobs demonstrated for conference attendees
and said would be available within the next 60 days. ITunes 4.9 will
integrate free podcasts as a menu item, allowing users to listen to
podcasts and subscribe to them, with new podcasts they subscribe to
downloaded to their iPods when the devices are synched to an iTunes-
enabled computer.

NTT DoCoMo, Inc. announced today the development of the 3G FOMA®
901iS series, five handsets equipped for mobile-wallet e-money,
ticketing and other handy mobile smart-card functions.
DoCoMo expects the new series (a 106x50x24 mm device with a 2.4" LCD
display, up to 400 hours of standby time, and miniSD memory card
capability) to fuel the continued nationwide expansion of convenient
mobile-wallet services. The 901iS is also expected to further boost
the popularity of handsets equipped with FeliCa® IC card technology,
which have sold more than 3.34 million units to date.
The 901iS is DoCoMo's first series in which all models are equipped

Beginning in Fall 2005, first-year students entering the UMain
College of Education and Human Development and planning to major in
Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Early Childhood Education
or the Kinesiology and Physical Education Teacher Certification
Option, will be required to have the designated computer and software
prior to the beginning of the 2006 academic year. Incoming Education
majors in Fall 2006, including Master of Arts in Teaching degree
students, must have an Apple iBook and specified software as first-
year students.
With Maine public schools wired for Internet access and laptops
provided to seventh and eighth graders and their teachers through the
Maine Learning Technology Initiative, the state has made the
commitment to build technology-rich classroom environments and
instruction for its public school students, said College Dean Robert
Cobb.
The Teacher Education Faculty has chosen Apple iBook as the
designated computer and software because of Macintosh痴 commitment to
technology designed for educational use and innovation, and to align
with the laptops available through the Maine Learning Technology
Initiative. In addition, Education faculty members say the Macintosh
package is less vulnerable to viruses.
The College has worked to gain a substantial iBook purchase discount
for students. As a required component of the Education program,
computer purchase qualifies as a 鼎ost of attendance, and various
loan options exist through the Office of Student Financial Aid.
Students may also apply for low-interest loans from the University of
Maine Credit Union. The purchase discount on the Apple iBook is also
available to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the
College痴 non-certification programs. The College initiative also has
a built-in professional development component to ensure that faculty
integrate technology into their instruction and have the ability to
assist students in using technology.

Xbox 2 SDK released on cool Apple Power Mac G5s
By Paul Dutton: Saturday 28 February 2004, 15:59
WE'VE JUST got word that the Software Development Kit (SDK) for
Microsoft’s forthcoming Xbox 2 has now been released to Developers.
As we reported earlier, IBM processors are indeed the Xbox 2
development platform of choice.
The big news to us is that the XBOX 2 SDK has been seeded to
developers on dual Apple Power Mac G5 systems running a custom
Windows NT Kernel.

Xbox 360 demos running on Macs
Published: May 13, 2005, 2:11 PM PDT
By Richard Shim
Staff Writer, CNET News.com
The nifty clips of video games [shown during a pre-taped MTV
broadcast on Thursday night] supporting Microsoft's new Xbox 360
console are running on Apple machines, Microsoft confirmed on Friday.
"We purchased a number of Apple G5's because very specific hardware
components of the G5 allow developers to emulate some of the
technology behind future Xbox products and services," a Microsoft
spokesperson said in a statement. "This is an interim development
tool that will be replaced with a more powerful and comprehensive
solution later."
The current systems shown at product introductions are prototypes.
Final systems are expected to come out in all three major regions--
North America, Europe and Asia--by the end of the year.
The prices for the new consoles have yet to be announced, but
executives have said they won't be released until after the E3 game
conference in Los Angeles next week.
Some details have been released on the new console, such as its 20GB
hard drive, DVD-ROM drive and 500MHz ATI graphics processor, but
others will be announced during the conference. Executives have said
that up to 40 titles for the Xbox 360 will be announced by the end of
the year.
The new console from Microsoft is based on a similar IBM PowerPC
architecture used in Apple computers--the Xbox 360 uses three 3.2GHz
symmetrical cores, according to the company. Apple has been using
PowerPC chips since 1994 and Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs has
said the company is happy with IBM's PowerPC family of chips.
Microsoft recently switched processors from an Intel chip used in the
first Xbox console to a custom Xbox processor based on Big Blue's
Power technology in its new Xbox 360.
For anyone else bothered by this incompatibility with SPSS 11, the
only work-around I have found to date is to run SPSS for Windows
under Virtual PC. One upshot is that some add-on modules (eg,
complex samples) are available only for the Windows 13.0 version.

Security Advisory (May 8, 2005) The Mozilla Foundation is aware of
two potentially critical Firefox security vulnerabilities as reported
publicly Saturday, May 7th. There are currently no known active
exploits of these vulnerabilities although a "proof of concept" has
been reported. Changes to the Mozilla Update web service have been
made to mitigate the risk of an exploit. Mozilla is aggressively
working to provide a more comprehensive solution to these potential
vulnerabilities and will provide that solution in a forthcoming
security update. Users can further protect themselves today by
temporarily disabling JavaScript.
For more information about the vulnerabilities, see the advisory at
