The Recording Industry Association of America, a trade group, has sought to force Verizon Communications and other Internet service providers to reveal the names of customers it suspects may be copying music without permission. The recording industry says the widespread copying of music over the Internet is partially to blame for falling CD sales. Verizon has argued that existing copyright law does not give the recording industry such authority and its customers' privacy was being violated. A lower court earlier this year upheld the recording industry's tactics, which have served as the basis for hundreds of lawsuits filed against individual Internet users. But in a strongly worded ruling, the appeals court sided with Verizon, saying a 1998 copyright law does not give copyright holders the ability to subpoena customer names from Internet providers without filing a formal lawsuit. "In sum, we agree with Verizon that (the law) does not by its terms authorize the subpoenas issued here," Chief Judge Douglas Ginsburg wrote. To upgrade the firmware on your Power Mac G5, follow the instructions below. You can print these instructions so they are available while you upgrade your firmware. The Power Mac G5 Firmware Updater Version 5.1.4 is installed in Applications/Utilities. 1.Save changes to open files and then quit all applications, if necessary 2.Open the firmware updater. 3.Click Shut Down in the Firmware Update window to turn off your computer. Wait for your computer to shut down, saving changes if necessary. 4.Press and hold in the Power button on the Power Mac G5 until you hear a long tone. 5. Release the Power button when you hear the tone or see the Power button light flashing. The firmware updater starts automatically. A status bar shows the progress of the update. You may see more than one status bar. After the update is complete, your system restarts automatically. INTEREST: SCO Loses First Legal Round in Linux Battle

The SCO Group Inc. on Friday was dealt a legal setback in its case against IBM Corp. A magistrate of the U.S. District Court in Utah told SCO it has 30 days to respond to IBM's demands for details about the Linux code SCO claims encroaches on its intellectual property. Magistrate Brooke C. Wells said that SCO will have to answer IBM interrogatories 12 and 13, which demand that SCO produce "all source code and other material in Linux ... to which plaintiff (SCO) has rights" and describe exactly how SCO believes IBM infringed these rights. The judge's order will be put into place on Wednesday, Dec. 10. In addition, Ogden, Utah-based SCO must reveal all instances in which it has distributed Unix source code in ways that would lead to it being legally added to Linux. This ruling addresses a contention by Linux advocates that any Unix code in Linux was placed there by SCO itself. In short, SCO will have to show IBM proof that its claimed "million lines of code" are actually in Linux, and that IBM, not SCO, was responsible for illegally placing the code there. SCO also tried to convince the judge during the hearing that IBM should be made to show its Unix code before the interrogatories were granted, but Wells denied this request. IBM spokesperson Trink Guarino said the Armonk, N.Y. company was happy with the results. "We are very pleased the court has indicated it will compel SCO to finally back up its claims instead of relying on marketplace FUD."

The company claims that Panther offers more than 150 new features, highlighted by Exposé, which the New York Times' David Pogue describes as "the biggest graphical breakthrough that operating systems have achieved in years." Other changes are perhaps less eye-catching, but offer improvements in security, system responsiveness, navigation, file management, and the ubiquitous "more." Many developers have already announced that their products are Panther-compatible, and others are rushing to ensure that they're up-to-date with the new OS. INFORMATION: Apple Macintosh OS X 10.3 (Panther) licencing

According to the information provided by Apple so far, there will be two categories of licencing available at the UofM Bookstore Computers on Campus: 1) machines not purchased with university funds: licencing will be standard form. To run 10.3 you must purchase a new copy or an upgrade at the education/bookstore/upgrade price. 2) machines purchased with university funds including budgets, grants, and PDA funds: a presentation, sponsored by Computers on Campus, will be held in the next few weeks to detail the licencing options for these machines. This plan will probably include a mechanism for upgrade protection. Continuing in his effort to either become wealthy or famous, he left Apple to co-found Starlight Networks in 1990. Starlight was a pioneer in carrying real-time video reliably across LANs. Charlie was one of the architects of the system as well as the Director of Engineering there. He left Starlight in 1996 to join OnLive Systems Inc., where he helped design and build a Java based audio conferencing system using IP over the Internet. In 1998, Charlie was lured back into the world of 'Big Companies' when he joined Cisco Systems. There he was reunited with some former BNR colleagues in the realm of real-time packet voice & video to create IP-based products for Cisco.
