Pre-Holiday Update from the Office of the Associate Dean, Undergraduate & Partnerships

Sent on behalf of Dr. Wayne Serebrin, Associate Dean, Undergraduate & Partnerships: I hope that you have all had many rewarding opportunities to learn with and from children/youth, experienced educators, and the entire community of learners in your practicum schools this term. Thank you for your joyful energy, sustained commitment, and many contributions to our partner schools-developing caring educational relationships, engaging students in meaningful learning opportunities, and supporting the work of all involved in our partnerships. Throughout your practicum, I hope you have been able to maintain a spirit of openness, curiosity, humility, and wonder leading you to new personal and professional questions and conversations. [A book cover with a drawing of a child Description automatically generated] Recently, I have been sharing the picture book At the drop of a cat (written by Élise Fontenaille and illustrated by Violeta Lópiz) with my colleagues and friends. In a review of this picture book by The Marginalian's author Maria Popova, Popova (2023) writes: That one mind can reach out from its lonely cave of bone and touch another, express its joys and sorrows to another-this is the great miracle of being alive together. The object of human communication is not the exchange of information but the exchange of understanding. If we are lucky enough, if we are attentive enough, communication then becomes a system for the transfer of tenderness. That we have invented so many forms of it-the language of words, the language of music, the language of flowers-is a testament to our elemental need for this exchange. Popova, M. (2023, November 16). It is my hope that over the next weeks, you will have some collective opportunities to rest, to metabolize difficulties and disappointments, to play, and to dream. Registration for the January 8th B.Ed Program Day is now open!

Sent on behalf of Dr. Wayne Serebrin, Associate Dean, Undergraduate & Partnerships: Hello, We are pleased to announce registration for the B.Ed Program Day on January 8th, 2024, is open! All students registered in the B.Ed. program are to choose two sessions from the options listed on the website, one for each time slot. Session descriptions and the link to register can be found on our UM Education page: Faculty of Education | University of Manitoba (umanitoba.ca)<https://umanitoba.ca/education/> in the main banner area. You have until noon on Friday, December 15th to register. Register early to ensure you can attend the sessions that interest you the most; session capacities are limited by classroom size and fire code regulations. You will register for two workshops during the day and the sessions will take place as follows: Session 1: 10am - 12 Noon Lunch: 12 Noon - 1pm Session 2: 1 - 3pm Some session descriptions note a general level (Early, Middle, Senior Years) focus. Most sessions, however, are geared to compliment your cross-stream learning. In Manitoba, teacher certification allows you to teach at any level and you never know where your career may take you. As with all Professional Learning Days hosted by the Faculty, attendance will be noted by the session speakers. You will not have to enter your attendance, as this is not considered a practicum day but a professional learning day for all enrolled B.Ed. students. Thank you.
