This presentation offers a glimpse into our ongoing mixed methods, critical participatory action research (CPAR) aimed at mapping racial/ethnic disparities in undergraduate nursing education. The focus is primarily on our methodology and approach to CPAR, underscoring its collaborative nature and its potential to engage with undergraduate nursing students in a co-creative process. Through participatory theatre, sharing circle dialogue and collective reflections, we worked together (as a team of researchers and undergraduate nursing student research assistants) to develop a survey on racial disparities to administer to the undergraduate nursing student population. Some preliminary survey data collected from a sample of undergraduate nursing students at the University of Manitoba will be presented. The survey data includes demographic information including information about intersecting social identities, academic and clinical performance metrics, and initial insights into students' perceptions of disparities within their educational journey. These quantitative findings provide an early snapshot of some of the complexities and tensions within undergraduate nursing education that may be applicable to the broader nursing profession.

"This additional information is primarily for nursing and midwifery students who have already expressed interest to travel to Amazon either February 17-25 or April 26-May 5, 2024.
The application for the Interprofessional Learning within an Indigenous community in the Amazon is now open. https://forms.office.com/r/A8H5gfNygc The application will remain open until October 31st at midnight.
Some students may have already filled in an "application". As this is a new opportunity for Rady students, the intent of the previous form was to ensure that there was enough interest to proceed. Names were not attached to the responses. Regardless of whether you filled in the previous form, you need to fill in this one.
There are two time options (February 17-25 or April 26-May 5).
While this partnership is new to Rady, the U of M community engaged learning office has been coordinating this experience for several years. This partnership was put on hold during the pandemic and are now exploring running it again for students within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The community we are partnering with is called "AMUPAKIN". They are a collective of midwives who have been using traditional birthing methods and using traditional medicines that have been passed down to them. The focus of the program will be beyond childbirth to include overall health and well-being. I was able to join the U of M team in 2018 and have stayed connected to the mamas who work in AMUPAKIN. They are very excited to have future health care providers live and work with them in 2024. I am fluent in Spanish (though the community members first language is Kichwa).
The agenda will be loosely based on the previous opportunities in 2020 (though more focused on holistic health): https://umanitoba.ca/community-engaged-learning/amazon
Here is a video to give you a sense of the collective of women: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90vS1GmffKc
Missed classes/assignments/clinical hours: Students will be responsible for any missed time for this travel. Before selecting your dates, please ensure that if your selection requires missing class/clinical time, that you have confirmed with your program that you are able to attend (there may have even been some direction from them at the top of this email).
Fees: The fee of $2500 will include return airfare, all in-country transportation and accommodations, three daily meals, and salaries/financial contributions to the community of midwives and healers (to support them to continue to provide free services to their communities). This fee will allow us to run this program in a good way that is respectful of the community's time and knowledge and provides you with meals, accommodation and travel. There may be limited access to additional funds to subsidize students travel costs.
Immunizations: Students are responsible for their own immunizations. There are no required immunizations that are above those required as part of Rady programs, however there are some recommended immunizations. Information can be found here<https://wwwnc.cdc.gov/travel/destinations/traveler/none/ecuador?s_cid=ncezi…>. You are not required to get immunized for Yellow Fever in this region.
Passports: You will need a passport to travel to Ecuador. Possible routes will be to go through airports in the US or Columbia. If you have a Canadian passport, you are able to take either route. Students with passports from other countries will need to confirm that they have the proper visas for the route that is selected for them.
Next steps: We are anticipating more applicants than spaces. The next stage of the application process will be a group interview."

Subject: [Nursing-bn-students] Proposed NSA Winter Gala - December 2023 -
Hello Nursing Students,
My name is Sophie, and I am your Programming Chair in the Nursing Students' Association.
Thank you to everyone that has been a part of our events so far - with the help of some lovely volunteers, and a great events team, we were able to host the Code Red Social and a free pizza lunch in September!
While we have a few October plans in the works, the events team is looking forward to the winter holidays in the hopes of organizing a Winter Gala to celebrate you, and all the hard work put in (and still to be put in 😉) this semester!
However, with an event of this scale, we need to know if students are interested before any concrete plans are made.
We ask that you please fill out the Google Form linked below to let us know if this is an event you would be interested in attending. Even if you are unable to attend, please include this response on the form.
Information regarding dates, pricing, and location is indicated on the form.

NSA Winter Gala<https://forms.gle/o8wdKNfcpyzhjh188>
Hello Nursing Students! Although it may seem far away, December will be around before we know it - and your NSA wants to celebrate the end of Fall Term by hosting a Winter Holiday Gala! Because of the scale of the event, we want to check in first with you to see what interest is like. Here's what we know so far: - the event would be held towards the end of exam week, but AFTER ALL NURSING EXAMS ARE DONE. This means the gala would likely happen between the 19th and 21st of December, schedule dependent. - some venue options so far include (but are not limited to) the Leaf at Assiniboine Park, and the Fort Garry Hotel. - ticket prices are likely to be around $50-60, and would include dinner and a dance. We look forward to hearing from you all! Sophie (Programming Chair), Faith (Programming Associate), and Ari (Senior Stick)

Subject: [Nursing-bn-students] Cleanliness of lounge + community pantry
Hello students,
I hope your semester is going well so far!
I wanted to reach out to you all and talk about cleanliness in our lounges. The student lounge is a shared space utilized by hundreds of students, and it's crucial that we maintain its cleanliness and tidiness. Recently, some of our dedicated NSA members have been washing dishes and picking up wrappers/garbage left behind by others. We believe it's a collective responsibility to keep the space clean.
That being said, it's important to keep our lounge clean because of a new project we've been working on for the past few months. We are thrilled to announce that we have partnered with Harvest Manitoba to implement a new community pantry project on the main floor student lounge! This initiative by the Nursing Students Association aims to foster a sense of community and support among us, making sure that nursing students do not have to face food insecurity.
As we introduce our new community pantry in the main floor student lounge, we want to emphasize the importance of considerate usage. While the pantry and fridge are here to provide support and sustenance, it's crucial that we maintain a balance and be mindful of those in need.
We kindly request that everyone refrains from hoarding food and taking an excessive amount home. Let's prioritize sharing and consider the needs of our fellow students who may rely on the community pantry for their meals. By being considerate in our usage, we can ensure that everyone has equal access to this resource.
Let's work together to ensure the community pantry and the entire student lounge remain neat and organized. Dispose of waste properly, clean up after using the kitchen, and be mindful of others sharing this space. By doing so, we can create a pleasant and welcoming environment for all.
Thank you for your cooperation!
