I am emailing to notify you that the voting period for the NSA October By-Election will be taking place from October 23-25th via Simply Voting online voting software. This also means that the nomination period for the election is now open. Why Join NSA? Getting involved with NSA is a great way to meet other College of Nursing students and faculty members. It is also a great way to sharpen your leadership, team work and professional development skills, and is a great thing to have on your resume! Involvement on the Nursing Students’ Association is added to your co-curricular record too! Attend Orange Shirt Day at the College of Nursing!

Hello students, faculty, and staff. We would like to formally invite you all to the 10th annual Orange Shirt Day event hosted by the Nursing Students Association and the College of Nursing. The event is taking place this week on Friday September 27th, from 9:45am-1:00pm! What is the Orange Shirt Day at the College of Nursing? The Orange Shirt Day event at the College of Nursing was created on the foundations of reconciliation and awareness of the history and impact of residential school systems in Manitoba. The event unites the University of Manitoba student and staff community with Indigenous Elders, Chiefs, and guest speakers to learn from the past (Residential School System) and the important role each and everyone of us play in truth/reconciliation. Various speakers from our academic community also attend including Elder Norman Meede, Dean of the College of Nursing, and the President of University of Manitoba. An annual walk also occurs, which this year will be from Helen Glass to the administration building. Following, a fellowship lunch/feast is held at the College of Nursing where student, staff, and UM community members can create connections with Indigenous peoples in our community. The topic for the day captures the complexities and interconnections inherent in the field of planetary health with two opportunities to discuss the topic of sustainability at the keynote address at 10:00 AM and a panel discussion at 2:00 PM. Hello Students, Are you a Black or racialized student within the College of Nursing? If so, this message is for you! As a Black faculty member, I recognize the need for a dedicated support group for Black and racialized students. I’m thrilled to announce the creation of this group with the following goals: * Create a Safe Space: A supportive environment where Black and racialized nursing students can thrive. * Promote Mental Health: Enhance well-being and mental health within our community. * Boost Academic Success: Improve academic performance and retention rates. * Build Community: Foster a strong sense of belonging and connection. * Offer Tailored Resources: Provide mentorship and resources that address the unique needs of our students. Our first meeting is on September 27th at noon in Helen Glass Room #348. Please bring your ideas and thoughts on how to best operate as a group! Presenter: Andrea Raynak, RN, MPH(N), PhD(C), Director, Nursing Practice & Learning, Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre; Lecturer, Lakehead University. Title: Nurses’ attitudes towards patients who use substances in the hospital setting. ZOOM LINK: https://ca01web.zoom.us/j/68302318816?pwd=RjBNSmtGTnRvU3RoYVhSUGtYU0N3QT09 Abstract: Nurses, as the primary providers of 24-hour care, are crucial in observing, recognizing, and intervening with patients who use substances in the hospital setting. According to the literature, nurses, despite their central role as care providers, often harbor negative attitudes toward patients who use substances, subsequently leading to a perceived lack of empathy and the manifestation of discriminatory behaviors. This presentation will examine the persistence and impact of these negative attitudes to highlight the challenges that patients who use substances face in accessing respectful care. As self-reported by nurses, the factors contributing to these attitudes include a paucity of knowledge about substance use and the lack of institutional policies and/or procedures to guide nurses while they are caring for this patient population. Recommendations for improving care include enhancing nurses’ professional development through targeted education and revising and/or implementing organizational policies to support a more patient-centred and pragmatic approach. This presentation will advocate for transformative changes within health care organizations to enhance the readiness of nurses to care for patients who use substances while simultaneously cultivating a supportive environment for these individuals. FALL 2024 LOCKER SALES

Hello Students, I hope you are all doing well. I am sending this email to provide some information about the lockers. The locker rental term ends on September 30th, 2024. If you purchased a locker this summer term, please ensure you clear out your lockers by 4:30pm on December 20th, 2024. This is to ensure that the lockers are available for incoming students on the first day of classes. I also want to let you know that locker sales for the new term will begin on SEPTEMBER 5TH, 2024 AT 12 noon, and not before that , and you can purchase them online through the NSA website only using either your debit or credit card. Please be sure to visit our website and take advantage of this opportunity to secure a locker for the upcoming term. The lockers cost $15 per term and are in the nursing locker room and along the hallway in the basement floor of the Helen glass building. There are limited lockers available so if you go to the website and there are no lockers in the dropdown menu that means they have all been purchased.
