Message to students - Bachelor of Midwifery Program - Attendance Regulation Update

Please do not reply to this email. Dear Students, In June 2025, the College of Nursing council approved a new Attendance regulation for the Bachelor of Midwifery Program. This new regulation will be in effect starting in the fall 2025 term. Please see the 2025 - 2026 Academic Calendar<https://umanitoba-ca-preview.courseleaf.com/undergraduate-studies/health-sc…> for an outline of academic regulations for the Bachelor of Midwifery Program. The updated Attendance regulation is also included below: Attendance As a professional program, students are expected to display a high academic and professional standard of conduct by punctual and regular attendance in all MDFY courses, including lectures, laboratories, workshops, intensives, placements, and tutorials. In the case of unavoidable circumstances (for example, illness or bereavement), students must contact the course instructor as soon as possible and submit an Absence declaration for each class or clinical day that is missed. Attendance in performance-based courses is essential for students to consistently demonstrate safe practice and meet the requirements of entry level competencies for the College of Midwives of Manitoba. As such, attendance in all aspects of performance-based courses is mandatory, including orientation activities. A student who misses more than seven (7) clinical days in a midwifery clinical courses (MDFY 2090, 3090, 4090, 4100) or an interprofessional clinical course (MDFY 3020), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. A student who misses two (2) intensive classes, which include simulation and/or skills laboratory activities (MDFY 2040, MDFY 2090, 3090, 4090), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. A student who misses one (1) class in an advanced clinical skills course (MDFY 3010, 4010), is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. If certificate courses such as NRP, MESP, or FHS are not completed due to absence(s), the student will be required to complete these courses privately, at their own expense. All certificate courses would need to be successfully completed within 8 weeks of the course end date to pass the course. Students are expected to complete 1820 hours of clinical practice time prior to starting Clerkship MDFY 4100. Once student absences in the clinical skills and clinical placement courses exceed 150 hours, students will be required to meet with the midwifery program director and will receive a learning contract. This may delay progression through the program. A student who misses more than two (2) theory classes, including in-person, online, or blended delivery courses, is at risk of failing the course. They will receive a learning contract and will be required to meet with the midwifery program director. Arriving late at a class/seminar/skills lab/clinical, or simulation day and/or leaving early is disruptive to all participants. A disruptive pattern of arriving late and/or leaving early may be considered equivalent to an absence.
