"This additional information is primarily for nursing and midwifery students who have already expressed interest to travel to Amazon either February 17-25 or April 26-May 5, 2024.

The application for the Interprofessional Learning within an Indigenous community in the Amazon is now open. https://forms.office.com/r/A8H5gfNygc The application will remain open until October 31st at midnight.

Some students may have already filled in an "application". As this is a new opportunity for Rady students, the intent of the previous form was to ensure that there was enough interest to proceed. Names were not attached to the responses. Regardless of whether you filled in the previous form, you need to fill in this one.

There are two time options (February 17-25 or April 26-May 5).

While this partnership is new to Rady, the U of M community engaged learning office has been coordinating this experience for several years. This partnership was put on hold during the pandemic and are now exploring running it again for students within the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The community we are partnering with is called "AMUPAKIN". They are a collective of midwives who have been using traditional birthing methods and using traditional medicines that have been passed down to them. The focus of the program will be beyond childbirth to include overall health and well-being. I was able to join the U of M team in 2018 and have stayed connected to the mamas who work in AMUPAKIN. They are very excited to have future health care providers live and work with them in 2024. I am fluent in Spanish (though the community members first language is Kichwa).

Missed classes/assignments/clinical hours: Students will be responsible for any missed time for this travel. Before selecting your dates, please ensure that if your selection requires missing class/clinical time, that you have confirmed with your program that you are able to attend (there may have even been some direction from them at the top of this email).

Fees: The fee of $2500 will include return airfare, all in-country transportation and accommodations, three daily meals, and salaries/financial contributions to the community of midwives and healers (to support them to continue to provide free services to their communities). This fee will allow us to run this program in a good way that is respectful of the community's time and knowledge and provides you with meals, accommodation and travel. There may be limited access to additional funds to subsidize students travel costs.

Immunizations: Students are responsible for their own immunizations. There are no required immunizations that are above those required as part of Rady programs, however there are some recommended immunizations. You are not required to get immunized for Yellow Fever in this region.

Passports: You will need a passport to travel to Ecuador. Possible routes will be to go through airports in the US or Columbia. If you have a Canadian passport, you are able to take either route. Students with passports from other countries will need to confirm that they have the proper visas for the route that is selected for them.

Next steps: We are anticipating more applicants than spaces. The next stage of the application process will be a group interview."
