What’s Growing On in Plant Science?

Greenhouse News
Are researchers/students/technicians happy with the current special soil mix provided of 40% topsoil /40% sand /20% Peat?
The soil elevator in the greenhouse has been out of commission for the last two years but is expected to be renovated and available for use again by March 31. In the past, people have made their desired soil mix with the topsoil, sand and peat moss which has been available in the soil mixing room. While the elevator has been out of commission, we have supplied bulk bags of a special soil mix - 40% topsoil /40% sand /20% peat. In the future, we are considering filling the soil bins with this special mix only. This mix could be lightened with the available peat or perlite.
Please let Cathy.Bay(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Cathy.Bay@umanitoba.ca> or Parneet.Toora(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:Parneet.Toora@umanitoba.ca> know if you want to continue using the special soil mix or mix your own.

Hello All,
Last week we ordered a new tank of Liquid Nitrogen and it is almost full.
As we are getting really close to fiscal year end, we are looking to see if we can have the tank empty this week before March 31. We would appreciate if you could fill your tanks, so that we can process the chargebacks before year end.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Have a really great day!

With the newest flood forecast of a major flood, we should prepare to move all materials and machinery from the south side of the processing and seed storage building. To ensure adequate room and to safeguard expensive equipment, we should move the new plot combine from the drying room to Carman. This will allow for us to move other equipment and seed into the area vacated by the plot combine. While this is not adequate for all that we have, we will need to move some equipment and materials to other areas as well. I will be enquiring as to potential areas for us to store equipment and materials.

This morning an unknown person was found walking through the greenhouse area.
1. If you are in the building, especially after hours, and unsure if a person is allowed to be here, and you feel unsafe and/or cannot find a colleague to assist you in determining their right to be in the building, please contact security.
2. Anyone entering the building should have a key for access. Do not leave an outside door unlocked or propped open.
3. If you do not feel safe, get a colleague, or call for a safe-walk, to accompany you to your vehicle or to where you are going (e.g. bus stop, etc.). Plan ahead as much as possible.
4. Ensure all doors to labs, offices and other rooms (e.g. lunch room in the basement) are locked. Again, anyone with permitted access to the rooms will have a key.
Remember, our actions can impact others. Please take care and be safe.

Opportunity - $1,500 Prize, Trophy & Fame : Giant Pumpkin Growers Seminar
The Manitoba Giant Growers Association is hosting a FREE seminar on How to Grow a Giant Pumpkin.
This event is a great opportunity for those interested in growing a giant pumpkin of any size - particularly over 1,000 pounds.
This seminar will occur on Saturday, March 25th from 1-3 PM at the Carman Legion Hall (28 First St. N. W., Carman, MB).
Growers are encouraged to take their giant pumpkin to the 33rd annual Roland Pumpkin Fair in October.
Various prizes and awards will be up for grabs, with the first place winner for heaviest pumpkin receiving $1,500, a plaque, media recognition, and their name being engraved on the Edgar Van Wyck Trophy.
Note: A backyard city garden can easily provide adequate space.
A 20 x 20 ft. plot easily provides enough plant space to yield a 1000 lb. + pumpkin.
Free seeds with proven genetics will be available (limited quantity), as well as coffee and snacks.
Below is a list of the current records for the heaviest pumpkin.
Which record(s) will you be breaking???
Manitoban Record: 1660.5 pounds
Canadian Record: 2537.0 pounds
Word Record: 2702.9 pounds (Italy)
Good Morning,
Please find the safe work procedure (SWP) for accessing the Seed Storage, Processing and Drying building at the Point. This procedure will be in effect starting March 31, 2023 and continue until a re-assessment of the riverbank is conducted.
Please make sure anyone using this facility has read and is aware of this SWP. Signage and the SWP will also be posted on all entry points to the building.
We will have a Q&A on this topic on March 23, 2023 at the technicians meeting at 8:45am in room 218.
Please let me know if you have any concerns or comments.
Best Regards,
Rob
