Good Morning,
The rotor for the large centrifuge in room 334 has been damaged and is not useable (pictures attached). If you have been using this rotor, please come see me. My research group does not use this rotor and we will not be buying a new one.
This is a good opportunity to remind all users of department equipment that we need to ensure we take excellent care of all equipment and to notify the appropriate people when an item is damaged or needs maintenance.
Regards,
Rob Duncan

Important Update - Compressed Gas Cylinders
An important guideline has been released under the Chemical Safety Program found here: [?pdf icon] Compressed Gas Cylinder Guideline.pdf<https://umanitoba.sharepoint.com/sites/um-intranet-workplace-safety-and-hea…>
The document includes a notation about restraint:
"Cylinders must be stored upright and restrained with a rack, straps, chain, or appropriate
brackets to prevent from falling. The entire assembly must be non-combustible and able to
support the weight of the cylinder. Do not use wood, rope, strings, or plastic tubing. "
Examples of appropriate cylinder restraints are included as part of this document as well as other pertinent information. Permit holders are asked to review the guideline at the link above, implement in their labs, and contact Nicola Harris copied above with questions.

Hello Heads,
FYI there will be maintenance happening in the washrooms located on the first floor of the Agriculture Building, adjacent to the Ag atrium in rooms 122 and 124. Since these are accessible washrooms, alternate locations of accessible bathrooms nearby will be posted (in the Art Barn and the CWB building) once construction begins.
I will ask Crystal to communicate this more widely but wanted to give you a "head's" up.

Good afternoon Mya,
Just wanted to provide you with a quick update, the O&M team is planning to begin the maintenance required in Agriculture Building washrooms #122 and #124 the last week in June (week of June 26th).
The team will be targeting to have the maintenance completed by mid-July.
We will have signage prepared that will be posted on the washroom entrances when maintenance commences.
Please let me know if there are any questions or concerns.
Thank you again for your help,

I checked out the Art Barn facilities and they are hands down the best suggested alternative.
I suggest signage be made ahead of time that displays maps/directions with suggested alternative of the Art Barn and backup at the CWB.
Will Physical Plant make signage or is that up to us?
Thanks
Mya

Good morning Mya,
Thank you for feedback.
The plan would be that washrooms # 167 and 169 would remain available for use.
However, from the Physical Plant records, confirmed that washrooms # 167 and 169 would not be barrier-free.
Had inquired about additional accessible washroom alternatives nearest to the Agriculture building and was able to determine the following:
* 65 Dafoe, room 218 (inclusive)
* CWB Grain Storage Research, rooms 102 (men's) & 202 (women's)
* Dairy Barn Art Studio, rooms 108 (men's) & 109 (women's)
I've included an attached site plan as reference, which helps to outline the locations of these accessible washrooms in relation to washrooms #122 and 124.
Just wanted to reach out to inquire if perhaps these additional accessible washrooms may be suitable alternatives in the interim while washrooms #122 and 124 are undergoing maintenance?
Thank you,
Iex Wui Quach, P.Eng.

Hello, the alternative solution on the third floor will be problematic for those in a wheelchair - it involves a complicated elevator trip and tight turns in narrow halls-is there not a more suitable location alternative in the Agriculture building on the first floor I believe in Rooms 169 and 167?

Good Afternoon,
Physical Plant - Operations and Maintenance has identified washrooms #122 and #124 within the Agriculture Building as requiring minor maintenance.
Over the course of May and June 2023, the O&M team will be planning to complete the maintenance required. Washrooms #122 and #124 will not be operational during this period.
As washrooms #122 and #124 are undergoing maintenance, an alternate barrier-free washroom within the Agriculture Building is located on level 300, washroom #371.
A secondary alternative would be the barrier-free washroom located in 65 Dafoe.

Hi,
Please circulate this to all staff in the department.
We will be having the Annual Carman Field Tour on July 27. The tour will be similar to last year with the tour taking place in the morning, which will be followed by lunch. I have circulated some request for information to the Prof's / PI's to get a numbers for lunch and to see who is interested in speaking at the tour stops.
Invitations will be going out to other departments, funding organizations, and farm media to attend.
Best regards,
Curt McCartney
Good Morning,
We met with two different groups of engineers on June 7th (geotechnical and architectural) regarding the status of the riverbank and the use of the seed processing, storage and drying building. We should receive the report next week. There is potential that we maybe able to use the seed processing and storage building without restrictions in the coming weeks. Due to the nature of the riverbank, any major rain event could change this. If you notice any change in the riverbank or building (crack, movement, etc), please let the department know immediately. Even the slightest change needs to be recorded.
Of note, the architectural engineer is treating the drying area as a separate building. As of today, we can start using the drying area without the safe work procedure related to the 15 minute access.
Please let me know if you have any questions,
Rob
