The 2 new freezers in the basement of Plant Science are now ready to be occupied. If people could move their samples out of the walk-in freezer in room 188, space could be made for samples coming in from the field.

Dear Biodiversity Colleagues,
Here is a message from Martin Entz inviting you to participate in the UM's Natural Systems Agriculture Tour. On-line and in-person options available, so register now (see poster for details).
July and August are some of the busiest times in the agricultural calendar. There are many opportunities to see the fantastic research being conducted in our province, and indeed across the country. Plus, summer time is beautiful in Canada - and we all look for opportunities to take a well-deserved vacation.
But let me pitch the Natural Systems Agriculture field day to you. This half day field experience is taking place a mere 20 km south of the city. You will see and experience things that no other field day in Manitoba (or indeed Canada) offers. Take this image below (left; taken July 24, 2023 for example). It shows the 32nd consecutive organically produced flax crop - grown in rotation with wheat and alfalfa. How is it possible that a crop which we characterize as non-competitive with weeds seems to be functioning so well even though no synthetic fertilizer or pesticide has been added for over 3 decades? MSc student, Laetitia Mukungu will explain. She is bringing her microscope to the field so that participants can see the beneficial fungi responsible for allowing the flax to punch above its weight.
The image on the right -shows one of our three restored Prairie plots being burned this spring. One of the tour features - the Glenlea long-term experiment - compares conventional no-till, diverse and organic cropping systems to a Prairie grassland - that was established at the outset of the study over 30 years ago. When we think about "Nature-based solutions", this Prairie serves as an important ecological benchmark.

These are just two of the attractions at the Natural Systems Agriculture field day. Most of the agroecological research that will be featured (see attached poster) involves graduate students - from departments of Plant Science, Entomology, Soil Science and Animal Science. Come learn from and support these individuals.
Please register today and see you on the 1st!

Plan for Carman Field Tour and the Carman Games
The Events Committees have been working to plan the Carman Field Tour on July27. The Grad Students have planned a "Carman Games" to follow the lunch. Our goals for the day are to learn about each others' research, socialize, and have some fun.
Attached is travel information for those who not been to the Ian N. Morrison Research Farm in Carman. The main routes are highway 3 or highway 2 (neither are under construction right now). Highway 3 is the shortest route. Please park in the guest parking lot on the south side of the main building (see attached). All vehicles going into the field plots need to be washed at the spray pad.
Please make your own arrangements for travel. Let Curt McCartney know if you need help, but try to sort this out as much as possible between different groups.
Please arrive at the farm around 9:15 am. There will be coffee and donuts available at the main building before the tour gets started (in the atrium of the main building and the grass on the west side).
We will be splitting the tour into three groups with all groups following the same route. We are expecting about 140 people, so this will help keep the groups to a manageable size. The first tour group will depart at 9:45 and then ever 10 minutes. All speakers will start in the first tour group. Once at their tour stop, they will present to all tour groups and continue on the tour with the last tour group. This will allow the speakers to see everyone's presentations. The tour will end at the main building where we will have a catered lunch at 12:50 pm. The Carman Games will follow lunch at about 2:00 or 2:30 pm.
The lunch will be served in the atrium with seating inside and outside. Please take the lunch that you requested. Those who requested gluten-free and vegan will be able to pickup their lunches in the kitchen. The regular and vegetarian lunches will be served in the regular lunch lineup.
Please dress for the weather (rain jacket, sunscreen, possibly mosquito spray). Walking shoes are recommended. Shoes will need to be sanitized by walking through a solution (likely spray nine) to prevent introduction of plant pathogens onto the farm (biosecurity).
A detailed schedule of the tour stops and speakers is attached.
Speakers: Please check the schedule to see when you present, and how much time you have been allotted. Please stick to your allotted speaking time. We will cut people off if we are falling behind schedule.
The powerpoint file shows the tour route around the farm.
We are looking forward to seeing everyone on Thursday!
Best regards,
Curt

Dear Colleagues and students,
I want to invite you to a field day taking place at the Glenlea Research Centre on August 1, 2023. This field day focuses on the Faculty's collaborative "Natural Systems Agriculture" research program. It is led by the Department of Plant Science's Natural Systems Agriculture laboratory, in close collaboration with graduate student programs in Soil Science, Animal Science, and Entomology. There will be a cash lunch at which time Dr. Andreas Gattinger of Justus Liebig University will give an update on organic agricultural research in Germany (via zoom). See the attached flyer for details.
In order to make it convenient for you, it is possible to participate either on-line or in-person. But you must register - just use the code on the attached poster.
Thanks for considering this learning experience.
