Career Compass Survey - 5 min

Hi UM colleagues, Career Services and the Student Affairs Communications team has created a survey to learn more about how staff have used/are currently utilizing the UM Career Compass<https://umanitoba.ca/career-services/career-planning#career-compass>. Paper copies of the degree specific guides have not been printed since 2019, though we have been receiving inquiries and understand there might be interest in some sort of paper material to provide to students and prospective students. The goal of this survey is to learn more to support our planning: https://forms.office.com/r/DdtDL61p3R. We would appreciate feedback by Friday, July 19. This survey takes only 5 min or less and we truly appreciate your input! Please do participate and share with your teams and any individuals who utilize this resource with students. First Year Planning Guide Launch and Get Ready to Register

Good morning, We are pleased to announce that the First Year Centre has completed the updates to the online version of the 2024-2025 First Year Planning Guide<https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/first-year/planning> (FYPG). In collaboration with our faculty partners and the Admissions office, we have worked together to create a user-friendly product for newly admitted students as they navigate course selection, timetabling and registration. All incoming direct entry students will be directed to the online guide prior to registration via emails sent by our Recruitment team and will be invited to attend the Get Ready to Register series<https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/first-year/planning#get-ready-to-regi…> where they will learn how to use the Guide to plan and register for first year courses. Please feel free to direct students to this resource as they prepare for course registration. The Guide continues to be available at https://umanitoba.ca/current-students/first-year/planning in both an interactive and PDF format. Faculty of Education Announcement of Introduction to Teaching Course- Information for Academic Advisors

Dear Colleagues, I hope you are doing well. As we approach student orientation sessions and registration for the upcoming 2024-25 academic year, I wanted to bring your attention to a new course developed by the Faculty of Education; Introduction to Education: What does it mean to Teach? I know that our Communication Coordinator, Alejandra González had sent some information via your coordinators but thought I would share a bit more information about the course. The faculty will be offering two sections of the course this Winter (EDUB 1790 A01 and EDUB 1790 A02). The course has been approved for the RIC list and is open to all UM students seeking or thinking about a career in teaching. This course may be used for credit in a student's first degree subject to the regulations of their faculty however, it cannot be applied to the Faculty of Education's programs. Also note, that the grading scale will be that of the Faculty of Education. The minimum passing grade of C (70-74%) is required. There will be limited space (class maximum 35) as we want to ensure that the course offers ample opportunity for student engagement and exploration through in class learning groups. If you have students interested in a teaching career, they may want to register for the course as soon as their window opens. The course sections will have a wait list. The faculty has created a landing page where interested students can learn about the course, the course instructor(s) and hear from instructors about it. We will be updating this page regularly as we develop new content. We are currently working on information about our second instructor and it should be available soon. Hi everyone, I hope this email finds you well! As incoming students begin to accept offers of admission for the 2024/25 academic year, some will be looking for residential accommodation on campus. I'm reaching out to you to highlight availability in St John's Residence (located centrally on campus at 17 Sifton Rd.) and to ask if you would be able to assist in encouraging your students to consider our Residence. About St John's Residence St John's Residence is a small, 100-bed community-focused on-campus residence. Each year the Residence hosts a diverse mix of students for all faculties studying at both undergraduate and graduate levels, along with occasional post-doctoral researchers and visiting scholars. The Residence features single-occupancy rooms and includes a comprehensive meal plan, offering students a home away from home where they can feel safe and secure, and focus on their academic studies. The community includes students of all ages and locations, including those from Manitoba, other provinces, and other countries. A well-trained student staff of Residence Dons are on-call every night, ready to respond to emergencies, and counsel students through issues such as homesickness, interpersonal conflict, and connecting with on-campus resources. The St John's College Residence Council provides leadership opportunities and organizes education and social events.
