The following message is sent on behalf of Alan Scott, Chief Risk Officer, Office of Risk Management and Security:
Date: December 17, 2019
To: All Staff, Faculty, and Students
From: Alan Scott, Chief Risk Officer, Office of Risk Management and Security
Subject: University Holiday Closing - 2019/2020
The University will close for this year's Holiday Season at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 20, 2019 and resume full operations on Thursday, January 2, 2020 at both Fort Garry and Bannatyne Campuses. University buildings will be locked during this period with exceptions and special circumstances.
During the holiday closure period, please be advised of the following:
Ø There will be no routine trades, caretaking, grounds or delivery services
Ø Elevators will remain in operation as all passenger elevators are equipped with an emergency telephone
Ø Lights should be turned off for the break
Ø All windows must be closed before leaving offices, labs and classrooms, in order to prevent the freeze up of radiators and plumbing systems
Ø To prevent infestation and mould, please remove food from departmental areas and fridges
Ø Unplug appliances including but not limited to: space heaters, kettles, coffee makers (keurigs etc.), microwaves and toasters. Please ensure all extension cords are taken out of use.
Ø Central Energy Plant (Fort Garry) and Physical Plant Engineers (Bannatyne) will be staffed 24/7
Should a Security emergency arise, please call:
(204) 474-9312 Security Services, Fort Garry Campus
(204) 789-3330 Security Services, Bannatyne Campus
Should a building emergency arise, please call
(204) 474-6281 Physical Plant, Fort Garry Campus
(204) 789-3330 Security Services, Bannatyne Campus
I would like to make a special appeal for your assistance in requesting staff and students to ensure doors and offices are locked over this period in order to reduce the risk of theft and vandalism. Door opening requests over the holidays should be sent to Security Services by December 20, 2019. These requests must be approved in advance by the Dean/Director or Unit Head.
Please inform Marcy Lokwani, Confidential Assistant O&M, Physical Plant, of any special requirements relating to animals or research equipment during this period. Every effort will be made to accommodate those special needs.
If anyone will be working on campus it is recommended that they take steps to ensure their safety if they are working alone:
Ø Follow any working alone policies your department or faculty may have in place.
Ø Let someone such as a co-worker, family member or Security Services, know what time you will be on campus and what time you plan to leave. Check in with them when you leave.
Ø Determine a plan of action to follow, such as contacting Security Services, if someone does not check in at the designated time.
Ø Avoid higher risk activities during the holiday and schedule them during a time when there is more support available.
I would like to wish everyone a warm and happy holiday season, and all the best in the New Year.
Regards,
