Dear UM community,
In December, I shared steps UM is taking to strengthen our emergency response procedures, focusing on three key areas: communication, infrastructure, and education. Since then, we’ve made important progress on infrastructure updates. Now we are launching a key initiative under our education pillar.
Campus Safety Education Sessions UM has partnered with the Winnipeg Police Service to offer safety training sessions for faculty, staff, and students on responding to active threats on campus. Beginning this March, these sessions, open to all, will be held annually at the Bannatyne and Fort Garry campuses.
I strongly encourage you to register for a sessionhttps://forms.office.com/r/TPeXHtMNsN prior to March 14.
Bannatyne Campus Sessions Date: Monday, March 17 or Tuesday, March 18, 2025 Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Location: Theatre B-BMSB, Bannatyne Campus
Fort Garry Campus Sessions Date: Wednesday, March 26 or Thursday, March 27, 2025 Time: 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Location: 108 St. John's College, Fort Garry Campus
These sessions will provide valuable information to all UM community members, and will cover our Emergency Response Planhttps://umanitoba.ca/security/emergency-procedures and the UM Safe Apphttps://umanitoba.ca/security/#your-safety-on-campus. Members of the Winnipeg Police Service will also be on hand to answer questions and provide guidance on what to do if there are active threats on campus. I also encourage you to download our UM Safe App on IOShttps://apps.apple.com/us/app/um-safe/id1491182847 or Androidhttps://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cutcom.apparmor.umanitoba&hl=en&pli=1, which provides real-time safety communication and support.
If you have questions about the upcoming sessions, please contact Michelle Ulrich.mailto:michelle.ulrich@umanitoba.ca
Thank you to our security teams, emergency responders, and campus community for their efforts and cooperation. Safety is a top priority, and UM is dedicated to continually enhancing campus security in partnership with this community.
Thank you for your continued engagement and we look forward to seeing you at one of the upcoming sessions this month.
Sincerely, [Michael Benarroch signature] Michael Benarroch, PhD President and Vice-Chancellor
