This update is being sent to students with cc email addresses at the University of Manitoba.
There is no need to reply.
--------------------------------------------------------------------- Here are a couple of updates to the earlier announcement:
- dial-up connections from home will be available again by mid-morning Sunday. - Unix logins and personal files will remain available throughout the day. - this means that (barring other system failures) access to the outside Internet will be available as usual on Sunday by dial-up from home computers and from Unix stations in student labs (113 Machray, 8 Dafoe, UCollege). Unix stations can be used by anyone with a cc account. - PCs in ACN student labs will still not be usable. - Macintoshes and others' standalone PCs on campus (those not needing Novell files or login) will continue to have an Internet connection. - There will still be no UofM email or UofM website.
We regret the inconvenience of the extended outage however it was necessitated by the sudden failure last week of the power supply backup and conditioner (UPS), leaving us without backup power. The outage is to install a new UPS.

to allow for electrical power changes in the central computer room.
UofM e-mail, dial-up connections, and the entire UofM website and associated services such as WebCT and library databases will be unavailable.
Login and file servers for Novell and Unix systems will be down so the ACN student computer labs on campus will not be usable.
Independent computer systems such as those operated by Computer Science, Physics, and Engineering should continue to function normally.
