Report all email requests to purchase gift cards - Do not purchase
The university has seen an increase in attempted and successful fraud incidents involving email requests to purchase gift cards.
No one at the university will ask staff or students to purchase gift cards in this manner.
Report any unsolicited email or text conversation that results in a request to purchase gift cards to spam@umanitoba.camailto:spam@umanitoba.ca. Buy nothing!
Please read the UM Today article, 'Buy me a prepaid VISA'https://news.umanitoba.ca/buy-me-a-prepaid-visa/, for more information and pay attention to the indicators of a scam below:
* No UM email address
* External warning tag on the message
* Appears to come from someone you know
* Short or urgent requests with vague details
* Unavailable for a call
* All conversations that ask you to "go buy gift cards, you will be reimbursed"
