Message from President David T. Barnard: Sexual Violence Resource Centre opens today
Good afternoon,
The University of Manitoba is pleased to announce the opening of the Sexual Violence Resource Centrehttps://news.umanitoba.ca/sexual-violence-resource-centre-opens-jan-27/ (SVRC) in UMSU University Centre. UM is committed to ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our campus community, and the launch of the SVRC contributes significantly toward advancing this institutional priority.
The SVRC will provide students, faculty and staff access to a team of experts who will answer questions, provide information, and most importantly, offer a supportive and well-informed response to survivors of sexual violence. The SVRC is well-positioned to help survivors navigate the sexual violence process, to provide information on mechanisms of support, and ensure there is appropriate follow-up.
The establishment of a centralized, university-led Sexual Violence Resource Centre addresses Recommendations 29, 30 and 31 in Responding to Sexual Violence, Harassment & Discrimination at The University Of Manitoba: A Path Forwardhttps://news.umanitoba.ca/um-addresses-sexual-violence-at-community-session/.
The SVRC is led by two new staff members with significant expertise in the design and delivery of trauma-based support for victims of sexual violence: Bre Woligroski, Sexual Violence Resource Centre coordinator, and Courtney Klassen, confidential intake and triage specialist. Bre Woligroski answers some key questions about the SVRC herehttps://news.umanitoba.ca/a-qa-with-bre-woligroski-from-the-sexual-violence-resource-centre/.
We commend the staff in Student Support and their many collaborators, including students, staff and faculty members, for working in partnership to develop this new, important resource for the university community.
Thank you,
David Barnard, President and Vice-Chancellor Lynn Zapshala-Kelln, Vice-President (Administration) and Chair of the Implementation Committee
