Please delete the earlier posting, and read this one instead. Hello Everyone: Apple will soon be rolling out iTunes-U (iTunes-University) in Canada. To learn about iTunes-U, look here: http://www.apple.com/education/solutions/itunes_u/ For an example of a iTunes-U implementation in the U.S.A., look here: http://itunes.stanford.edu/ In preparation of this eventuality, I'm initially looking for feedback just from our apple-list subscribers about that type of content they would like to see available from any proposed University of Manitoba iTunes-U (e.g. lectures, supplemental course material, Faculty of Music events / recitals, etc). Please keep in mind all materials being distributed via iTunes-U must not infringe copyright. I'm also looking for people in Administrative/Faculty and IT positions who would like to be apart of the initial informational meeting(s) with Apple Canada. This proposed meeting(s) is for the dissemination information only. I feel that it will be advantageous to better understand what the University's potential needs/uses of this proposed service might be prior to involving the senior administration. The Register is reporting that there is a Mac OS X virus propagated via iChat instant messenger. http://www.theregister.com/2006/02/16/mac_os-x_virus/ Not surprisingly a publisher of an anti-virus product is already advertising that it can remove this "worm" http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/osxleapa.html However, an Apple software developer has done a far more thorough investigation into what this potential malware (malicious-software) actually does. http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102379 In short, at best this a proof of concept trojan-horse at worst annoying. As with email, never open an attachment from anyone (including people you know) unless you asked for a file from them. If you sit down at an Intel-based Mac, it’ll still feel exactly like a Mac. However, the transition to Intel chips will affect many Mac users, especially those who rely on older software that hasn’t yet been updated for Intel-based Macs. And the Intel transition will have a long-term impact on the Mac world, affecting the design and speed of new Macs for years to come. [...] Okay, so… Core Duo. Is there also a Core Solo? You’ve been peeking. Indeed, there is—Intel’s got a lower-power, lower-heat sibling to the Core Duo called the Core Solo. When we asked Apple about its choice of the Core Duo for the iMac and MacBook Pro, company representatives said that “using dual-core processors for these products was exactly the right thing to do.” Of course, when Apple makes statements, you’ve got to parse them carefully. What we took out of this statement is that you might see a Core Solo processor in some other Macs in the future—ones that don’t need the power of a dual-core chip. For example, future Mac minis, iBooks, or even ultra-light notebooks might be candidates for such a chip. But that’s sheer speculation on our part. Intel’s got lots of chips. Apple will use some of them [...] Will Classic mode run under Rosetta? No, Classic mode won’t run on Intel Macs at all. Ask people from Apple this question, and they’ll do one of two things: shrug, or plug their ears and pretend they can’t hear you. Basically, Apple’s official policy is that if someone wants to figure out how to run Windows on a Mac, they can go ahead and do it, but Apple doesn’t want to know about it. One interesting quirk of these new Intel-based Macs is that, unlike the developer test systems released last summer, these systems use Intel’s Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) instead of the tried-and- true BIOS that classic PCs use. Windows XP doesn’t actually support EFI, although the forthcoming Windows Vista will. So the question is, how will people get Windows to run on the Mac? We’re sure someone much smarter than us will figure it out. Whether you’ll be able to re-boot into Windows or run it in some sort of compatibility box—hello, Virtual PC!—remains to be seen.

FLYNN Published: October 25, 2005 SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 24 - Intel, the largest computer chip maker, said on Monday that it would postpone volume production of a new Itanium processor for network servers because of problems with the quality of the product. The server chip, which is being developed under the code name Montecito, was scheduled for release in early 2006, the company said, but will now be shipped in "mid-2006." Intel would not provide details. The delay amounts to something of a black eye for Intel, as it seeks to maintain its lead in server chips over Advanced Micro Devices. Jonathan Eunice, an analyst at Illuminata, a market research company, said, "The real impact here is it gives A.M.D. a longer window to attack." An Intel spokesman, William E. Giles, said the company still expected Montecito to offer twice the performance of the current version. Mr. Giles said that some additional work was required "to meet production-level quality standards before we ramp the chip into volume production." The company said the delay in Montecito would push back release of its successor, called Montvale, to 2007, from 2006. A third iteration of the chip, Tukwila, will be delayed to 2008, from 2007. The changes came as something of a surprise because Intel announced two weeks ago that it was stepping up delivery of another server chip, the Xeon DP, its first server chip that places two processing engines on a single core. In trading Monday, shares of Intel declined 5 cents, to close at $23.10. The company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., also said it was canceling a planned version of the microprocessor used in the coming Xeon MP chip set, code-named Whitefield, and would replace it with a chip with better performance, named Tigerton. It is scheduled to be released in 2007.

Intel promotes dual-core and much more Intel Developer Forum Special By: Vanessa Ho IT World Canada (30 Sep 2005) Intel Corp. has pronounced 2006 as the year of dual-core. At the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, the chip maker announced it would offer three new dual-core products – for servers, desktops and notebooks – in the latter half of next year. A dual-core chip is a single chip with two distinct CPUs that process simultaneously. Everyday tasks can take advantage of this technology. For instance, dual-core enables routine tasks – such as e-mail checks and software updates – to run in the background without slowing down primary tasks and applications. Each of Intel's new dual-core microprocessors: Woodcrest (servers), Conroe (desktops) and Merom (laptops) are expected to increase performance up to five times while reducing power. “We need to think about delivering performance against a new metric,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO, in his opening keynote. And that new metric, he said, is performance per watt. Multi-core processors deliver performance without the power penalties that characterize the GHz approach, Otellini said. Boosting performance while reducing power was a common theme at the IDF. By the end of this decade, Otellini hopes to take the power envelope down on its products from five watts to half a watt. As well, Otellini said from now until the end of 2006, Intel will ship more than 60 million dual-core processors. And that's not the half of it. Intel won't stop at dual-core but has projects for quad- core and even double digit cores, the CEO said. Multi-core technology, he said, will lead to a "significant increase in performance and efficiency and significant decrease in energy consumption and energy bills for users.” Another highlight of the conference was Intel's unveiling the latest iteration of its Centrino notebook technology (designated "Napa") which offers better power management, radio performance and graphics while decreasing power consumption and reducing the size of the notebook by 20 per cent. Hi, I need some advice. I have seen this printer in the stores for a few weeks and it looks really nice for the price (~ $400). My problem is that, in addition to a few Mac OSX machines and one Windows machine, I have a Mac OS9 machine. It doesn't appear that it is supported by this printer. Am I just out of luck? ...from: http://www.eweek.com/article2/0,1895,1851752,00.asp Intel Preps Mac OS X Developer Tools By John Rizzo August 24, 2005 Intel Corp. will port its software developer tools to Mac OS X and will ship its first beta later this year, the chip maker told developers on Tuesday at its first-ever session on Mac OS X at the Intel Developer Forum in San Francisco. Kevin Smith, director of Intel Compiler Labs, said that Intel will port a complete set of compilers and performance-enhancing libraries to Apple Computer Inc.'s Intel-based version of Mac OS X. Intel will provide Mac tools for both single-core and multicore processors based on Intel's latest compiler technology. Smith said that the tools will contain the same feature set that Intel now provides for its Windows and Linux development tools. "We will offer one set of tools for all OSes," said Smith. Intel's compilers and libraries will work as plug-ins to Apple's Xcode development environment running in Mac OS X for Intel. Smith said Intel has no plans to offer the Mac tools in a version running on its Windows development environment. Developers creating software for both operating systems must use the tools running on each platform. The Mac OS X compilers and libraries will require Apple's prototype Intel-based Macs hardware and won't run on generic PCs, he said. Intel will help developers migrate from PowerPC to Intel architecture, according to Smith. Intel won't, however, provide tools for the simultaneous creation of software for both Intel and PowerPC processors, a strategy that Apple has said will help the transition to the Intel architecture. The Intel tools will support C, C++ and FORTRAN, but will not provide a compiler for Objective C, a language that Apple supports for Mac OS X developers. The Intel tools will be interoperable with Objective C. Smith said that Intel will also provide a migration guide for Metrowerks, a programming environment that Apple will not support with Mac OS X for Intel-based Macs. Intel's Mac OS X tools are still in the early stages of development, and Intel has not completed the feature set. "We're not at the demo stage yet," said Smith. Intel will support the development of device drivers for Mac OS X but has not made any decisions on what that support will take. Smith said that the first release will not have integration with I/0 Kit, Apple's device driver subsystem. I/0 Kit also enables high-level applications to access the hardware. Intel has also not considered whether it will support Altivec instructions, a 128-bit vector execution unit in PowerPC G4 and G5 processors. Such support won't be in the early betas. Intel's emphasis on performance is the reason why developers should use Intel's compilers and libraries, according to Smith. "We'll do more tuning for Intel Macs than anyone else," he said.
