To describe sound waves, acoustic experts refer to concepts such as frequency and amplitude. [...] Sound and Your Ears You can hear because your ears convert the vibrations of a sound wave in the air into signals that your brain interprets as sound. When the vibrations of a sound wave enter your ear, your eardrum and a set of tiny bones in your ear (the well-known hammer, anvil, and stirrup) amplify those vibrations. In your inner ear, these amplified vibrations move tiny hair cells that then convert the vibrations into nerve impulses sent to your brain. Your brain then interprets these nerve impulses as sound. If you expose your ears to excessive sound pressure, you can harm those small hair cells in your ears. And if harmed, those hair cells can lose the ability to transmit sound to your brain. As a result, you could experience noise-induced hearing loss. Symptoms can include distorted or muffled sound or difficulty understanding speech. While you can experience noise-induced hearing loss as a result of a one-time exposure to an extremely loud sound — like a gunshot — noise- induced hearing loss can also occur as a result of repeated exposure to loud sounds over time. The Australian Communications and Media Authority is building on the relative success of the country's 2003 Spam Act to ensure that businesses and consumers are protected from a deluge of unwanted e-mail. "The phenomenon of spam...continues to materially impact on e-mail as a communications medium," states the conduct code document, released on Wednesday. Although many countries have recognized spam as an issue, few have been able to react to it effectively. However, it's long been suggested that Internet service providers, which carry much of the e- mail, could solve the problem of spam overnight. "Since senders of spam require the services of service providers in order to send their spam, enlisting the support of those service providers has the potential of being an efficient and also a more proactive way of addressing the spam problem," according to the code document. As such, ISPs serving the Australian public must proactively scan traffic for open relays and botnets, networks of compromised PCs used for sending spam. In addition, spam filters must be offered and clearly advertised by each Australian ISP. ISPs must include clauses in all contracts that allow them to disconnect a user if they are knowingly or unwittingly relaying spam, once the ISP has taken "reasonable steps to notify the subscriber of the breach and (provided) reasonable assistance," the code says. They must also restrict inbound connections to any service that allows forwarding of e-mail on behalf of third parties. Microsoft has complained frequently in recent months that it has been denied the right to a fair defense in the continuing antitrust case with the European Commission. It has also accused the commission of collaborating with its rivals in the software industry and denying it access to what it contends are vital documents it needs to prepare its defense. A memo written by unidentified government officials in Washington stated that Microsoft's complaints raise "substantial concerns" about the way Microsoft is being treated, according to a person close to the commission who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss the memo. The memo was distributed this week through embassies in Europe and through the United States mission to the European Union in Brussels. United States diplomats visited the offices of three European commissioners earlier this week. Jonathan Todd, the spokesman for the competition commissioner, Neelie Kroes, confirmed that her close aides met American diplomats this week and received the memo. Keeping in mind that I'm also looking for people in Administrative/Faculty and IT positions who would like to be apart of the initial informational meeting(s) with Apple Canada. This proposed meeting(s) is for the dissemination information only. The Register is reporting that there is a Mac OS X virus propagated via iChat instant messenger. http://www.theregister.com/2006/02/16/mac_os-x_virus/ Not surprisingly a publisher of an anti-virus product is already advertising that it can remove this "worm" http://www.sophos.com/virusinfo/analyses/osxleapa.html However, an Apple software developer has done a far more thorough investigation into what this potential malware (malicious-software) actually does. http://www.ambrosiasw.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=102379 In short, at best this a proof of concept trojan-horse at worst annoying. As with email, never open an attachment from anyone (including people you know) unless you asked for a file from them. If you sit down at an Intel-based Mac, it’ll still feel exactly like a Mac. However, the transition to Intel chips will affect many Mac users, especially those who rely on older software that hasn’t yet been updated for Intel-based Macs. And the Intel transition will have a long-term impact on the Mac world, affecting the design and speed of new Macs for years to come. [...] Okay, so… Core Duo. Is there also a Core Solo? You’ve been peeking. Indeed, there is—Intel’s got a lower-power, lower-heat sibling to the Core Duo called the Core Solo. When we asked Apple about its choice of the Core Duo for the iMac and MacBook Pro, company representatives said that “using dual-core processors for these products was exactly the right thing to do.” Of course, when Apple makes statements, you’ve got to parse them carefully. What we took out of this statement is that you might see a Core Solo processor in some other Macs in the future—ones that don’t need the power of a dual-core chip. For example, future Mac minis, iBooks, or even ultra-light notebooks might be candidates for such a chip. But that’s sheer speculation on our part. Intel’s got lots of chips. Basically, Apple’s official policy is that if someone wants to figure out how to run Windows on a Mac, they can go ahead and do it, but Apple doesn’t want to know about it. One interesting quirk of these new Intel-based Macs is that, unlike the developer test systems released last summer, these systems use Intel’s Extensible Firmware Interface (EFI) instead of the tried-and- true BIOS that classic PCs use. Windows XP doesn’t actually support EFI, although the forthcoming Windows Vista will. So the question is, how will people get Windows to run on the Mac? We’re sure someone much smarter than us will figure it out. Whether you’ll be able to re-boot into Windows or run it in some sort of compatibility box—hello, Virtual PC!—remains to be seen.

FLYNN Published: October 25, 2005 SAN FRANCISCO, Oct. 24 - Intel, the largest computer chip maker, said on Monday that it would postpone volume production of a new Itanium processor for network servers because of problems with the quality of the product. The server chip, which is being developed under the code name Montecito, was scheduled for release in early 2006, the company said, but will now be shipped in "mid-2006." Intel would not provide details. The delay amounts to something of a black eye for Intel, as it seeks to maintain its lead in server chips over Advanced Micro Devices. Jonathan Eunice, an analyst at Illuminata, a market research company, said, "The real impact here is it gives A.M.D. a longer window to attack." An Intel spokesman, William E. Giles, said the company still expected Montecito to offer twice the performance of the current version. Mr. Giles said that some additional work was required "to meet production-level quality standards before we ramp the chip into volume production." The company said the delay in Montecito would push back release of its successor, called Montvale, to 2007, from 2006. A third iteration of the chip, Tukwila, will be delayed to 2008, from 2007. The changes came as something of a surprise because Intel announced two weeks ago that it was stepping up delivery of another server chip, the Xeon DP, its first server chip that places two processing engines on a single core. In trading Monday, shares of Intel declined 5 cents, to close at $23.10. The company, based in Santa Clara, Calif., also said it was canceling a planned version of the microprocessor used in the coming Xeon MP chip set, code-named Whitefield, and would replace it with a chip with better performance, named Tigerton. It is scheduled to be released in 2007.

At the Intel Developer Forum (IDF) in San Francisco, the chip maker announced it would offer three new dual-core products – for servers, desktops and notebooks – in the latter half of next year. A dual-core chip is a single chip with two distinct CPUs that process simultaneously. Everyday tasks can take advantage of this technology. For instance, dual-core enables routine tasks – such as e-mail checks and software updates – to run in the background without slowing down primary tasks and applications. Each of Intel's new dual-core microprocessors: Woodcrest (servers), Conroe (desktops) and Merom (laptops) are expected to increase performance up to five times while reducing power. “We need to think about delivering performance against a new metric,” said Paul Otellini, Intel president and CEO, in his opening keynote. And that new metric, he said, is performance per watt. Multi-core processors deliver performance without the power penalties that characterize the GHz approach, Otellini said. Boosting performance while reducing power was a common theme at the IDF. By the end of this decade, Otellini hopes to take the power envelope down on its products from five watts to half a watt. As well, Otellini said from now until the end of 2006, Intel will ship more than 60 million dual-core processors. And that's not the half of it. Intel won't stop at dual-core but has projects for quad- core and even double digit cores, the CEO said. Hello, Apple just sent me the following message regarding the return of levies on Canadian iPod purchases. See the details and site link below. "Customers who purchased an iPod or iPod mini between December 13, 2003, and December 21, 2004, may be eligible for a refund of the Canadian Private Copying levy that was applied to the iPod purchase price. Refer customers to www.apple.ca/ipodlevyrefund for information and to request a refund." Refund disbursements do not involve the BookStore, therefore please direct all inquiries to Apple Canada. John Wall, chief executive officer of Vista Inc., said his company is “considering all of its options” for a potential case against Microsoft because of the company’s choice of the name “Windows Vista” for the previously code-named Longhorn version of the OS. Wall said the naming of Windows may violate a trademark his company has and potentially create confusion over the software and services Vista provides. Vista is headquartered just down the road from Microsoft and provides small businesses with online information systems, including custom applications, as well as with consulting services. “If people call it Windows Vista, thats not a problem,” he said. “If people call it ‘Vista,’ that confuses it with our business and what we do.” Wall said Vista will be analyzing traffic to its Web site, http:// www.vista.com, to see what effect the “Windows Vista” name may have on visitors to the site. If the effect is significant — that is, if a surge of visitors come to Vista.com looking for information about Windows Vista — the company may decide to take legal actions over the trademark. The VistA Software Alliance and WorldVista, two nonprofit groups that assist American veterans hospitals, nursing homes and clinics with the VA’s VistA software, have denounced Microsoft’s name choice, citing possible confusion between the operating system and the software used to store and manage veterans’ patient information. Vista highlights include new ways to manage open windows, and enhancements to the interface for file directories and more. The first public peek at Office 12, meanwhile, may generate even more excitement since it is so different in appearance from previous versions. HP Color Laserjet 2600N

Hi, I need some advice. I have seen this printer in the stores for a few weeks and it looks really nice for the price (~ $400). My problem is that, in addition to a few Mac OSX machines and one Windows machine, I have a Mac OS9 machine. It doesn't appear that it is supported by this printer. Am I just out of luck?
