Dear clinical students:
I am writing to inform you about 2 awards – a clinical award that all senior students are automatically eligible for, and a research award that will require you to nominate yourself to be eligible. Here is the information about both awards:
The Marion & Morgan W. Wright Award for Clinical Excellence is given annually to a doctoral student in Clinical Psychology to recognize excellence during clinical practica. Each student in our program will be eligible to be considered for this award once, immediately after completing their 4th practicum. The Director of the Psychological Services Centre will form a committee to select the successful applicant, who will receive a cash prize worth approximately $400. Eligible students will be contacted to determine whether they wish to consent to having their practicum evaluations reviewed for this award.
The John R. Walker Clinical Research Award is given annually to a masters or doctoral student in clinical psychology to recognize excellence in scholarly and scientific achievement. Students in our program nominate themselves for this award each year. The criteria include evidence of scholarly achievement (a minimum GPA of 3.5) and scientific achievement (first authorship on a peer reviewed journal article, book chapter, or conference presentation) in the previous calendar year (i.e., the award this year will be for a 2024 publication). Students can only win this award once. Also, students cannot win both this award and the Vineberg Award for the same paper. The Director of Clinical Training will form a committee to select the successful applicant, who will receive a cash prize worth approximately $250. If you wish to be considered for this award, please send your submission via email to me at Kristin.Reynolds@Umanitoba.ca that includes:
1. An unofficial copy of your graduate transcript.
2. CV
3. A first-authored 2024 journal publication, book chapter, or conference presentation.
4. A brief cover letter (no more than a page) that outlines why you think your scientific achievement is noteworthy and deserving of the award.
1.
The deadline for submissions is Friday May 2, 2025. Awards will be announced at the Psychology Graduate Welcome Event in September 2025.
Thanks for considering these awards, and all the best.
