*Transform Bicycling and Walking Outside the Urban Context* *APBP webinar | Wed, Aug. 20th, 2014 | 2:00-3:00 pm*
Key take-aways: • Recognize challenges and potential for active transportation in small and rural communities • Know which key community partners can help create capacity • Identify and assess strategies for building active communities
Description: Smaller and rural communities must overcome inherent challenges to become more walkable, bicycle-friendly places. This webinar focuses on strategies these communities can use to develop routine inclusion of active transportation in new and retrofit projects.
Using examples drawn from Montana and Ontario, presenters explain the barriers and challenges for active transportation in small communities, and identify approaches that build on inherent advantages such as compact geography and traditional street grids. Strategies such as complete streets and sidewalk policies, joint use agreements, development codes and subdivision regulations, Safe Routes to School, transportation plans, and encouragement and evaluation programs help communities build support and capacity for active transportation.
Presenters: Joe Gilpin, Principal, Alta Planning + Design Sue Shikaze, Health Promoter, Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit
