________________________________
Please find attached the preliminary allocation for the University of Manitoba Graduate Fellowships (UMGF) for the 2020-2021 academic year. Allocations are based on the average enrolment over the previous two years (18-19 and 19-20).
Additionally please find attached a copy of the 2020-2021 UMGF Guidelines to Units, as well as the 2020-2021 UMGF Award Holders Guide for your reference.
Important information regarding the 2020 -2021 UMGF allocations and the discontinued Manitoba Graduate Scholarship (MGS) program:
As mentioned in the final UMGF allocation memo sent last year, the Provincial Government of Manitoba informed the University of Manitoba that they were terminating financial support for the Manitoba Graduate Scholarship (MGS) effective Spring 2019. The unanticipated loss of the MGS funding resulted in a shortfall of $2.1 million towards the UMGF/MGS budget last year. As the UMGF/MGS allocations had already been released at the time the MGS program was terminated by the Province, the Faculty of Graduate Studies provided the funds to cover the financial commitments (new awards and renewals) for the MGS in the 19-20 competition.
Effective the 2020-2021 UMGF competition, the MGS funding is no longer available, and this is reflected in the reduced 20-21 UMGF budget and attached allocations.
Please note that:
* Units must specify the duration of the UMGF when recommending students for the award. Note that the duration of the UMGF must be in yearly increments, must be specified on the recommendation form, and must be consistent with the UMGF regulations pertaining to the time in their program (i.e., students must be in the first two years of their Master’s program or the first four years of their Ph.D. program).
* Units/Faculties must specify the start date of the UMGF award (i.e., May 2020, September 2020 or January 2021). Recommendations submitted via AppReview will have a start date that coincides with the admission term
* In order to be considered for the UMGF Supplemental awards, recommendations must be submitted to the Faculty of Graduate Studies by June 30th.
* A negative allocation indicates that the unit has more UMGF awards currently active for its students than recent enrollment would support.
* Unit allocations have been rounded to the nearest whole number (any allocation less than 0.5 was rounded down).
* In some cases, coordination at the Budget Faculty level of the allocations to small units may be desirable. Individual units participating in such coordination must agree to it and any resulting arrangement must be approved by the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
To use your allocation:
You may begin submitting recommendations for the UMGF at any time now. There are two options for submitting the recommendation to FGS:
1. Submit the recommendation at the same time as recommendations are submitted to FGS via AppReview. This option is only available for students who have not yet been admitted.
2. The online recommendation form available on our website https://universityofmanitoba.formstack.com/forms/2020_2021_umgf_recommendati... (paper recommendations are not accepted).
Please submit your recommendations using only one of these options.
While UMGF recommendations may be submitted at any time, kindly note that all recommendations for the 2020 - 2021 UMGF competition must be submitted no later than September 30, 2020.
The Guidelines, Award Holder’s Guide and the Recommendation Form are available online at: http://umanitoba.ca/faculties/graduate_studies/funding/forms.html
