WiFi accounts for short-stay/conference guests

Hello, We have a central IT managed WiFi network across the campus. They use WPA2 Enterprise and have a secured network and a guest network. For the secured network a UofM ID is required to login. The guest network is open but limited. Over the spring/summer, when we have short-stay guests or conference guests stay in our residence buildings, the guest network wasn’t sufficient, so we have 1000’s of ID’s based on the building, and room etc that we loan out. We have new ones for each month so there’s less chance of abuse. Central IT has improved the quality of the guest network over the years. It wasn’t very usable initially. They want us to switch over to the guest network so that we all don’t have to manage all of these accounts. Do any of you have short-stay and/or conference guests stay in your residence buildings? Hello, Thanks for the joining the mailing list. A little bit about myself. I have been the IT administrator for Student Residences at the UofM for about 20 years now and seen many changes. 😊 There is a central IT department that looks after the enterprise systems but also has an IT help desk with staff that support some faculties. I’m what they now refer to as “distributed IT” and my position is funded through my department. We have 4 buildings and about 1200 beds. Each building has university provided WiFi and two have university provided ethernet. One building has DSL. I run a residence Internet help desk with students that we hire to provide tier one support. I have an assistant that helps me and provides tier two support. The tough problems get sent to me as the final tier. 😊 One of our biggest challenges is when students bring in devices that broadcast a WiFi signal. This causes the university provided WiFi to be not-so-great for others around them. Can any of you relate to this and how do you handle it?
