Hello Montana,
Pleasure to meet you. Your position sounds very familiar to me.
I have been in my position at Mount Royal University for 19 years. My position is titled as IT Coordinator, however, I believe my position could better be defined as IT Technology Analyst. I'm also funded by the Residence Services team, but work very closely with Campus IT.
Our Residence campus is divided up into two locations, East Residence and West Residence. We have approximately 1000 beds. Residence is made up of 1, 2 and 4 bedroom townhouses and apartment suites. We do not have dorms. West Residence is made up of 4 buildings and 5 townhouse blocks and East Residence has 20 townhouse blocks.
We run both WiFi and Wired networks in all our buildings. Our network is provided by a 3rd party ISP. I'm the primary point of contact for any network connectivity issues. We are currently running WiFi 6 in all our buildings. As part of our ResNET Policy, we do not allow 3rd party WiFi connections in our buildings. We ask any Rogue WiFi networks to be disabled. Students are able to get a LAN network connection only in their rooms from a third party. However, it is extremely rare to encounter this issue. Our ISP has created a WiFi network that is very robust and we've encountered very little issues. In the cases where I'm unable to resolve a Network issue, I can contact our ISP's NOC and they will assist me and try to resolve the issue.
In addition to the above, I'm also the StarRez Administrator (housing management software) for our department and assist all of our users with any StarRez issues.
Lastly, I'm also the first point of contact for any IT related issues with Staff workstations. If I'm unable to resolve the issue, I pass it on to the Campus IT team.
Regards,
John Chappell (he/him) IT Coordinator

Thanks for the joining the mailing list.
A little bit about myself. I have been the IT administrator for Student Residences at the UofM for about 20 years now and seen many changes. 😊 There is a central IT department that looks after the enterprise systems but also has an IT help desk with staff that support some faculties. I’m what they now refer to as “distributed IT” and my position is funded through my department. We have 4 buildings and about 1200 beds. Each building has university provided WiFi and two have university provided ethernet. One building has DSL. I run a residence Internet help desk with students that we hire to provide tier one support. I have an assistant that helps me and provides tier two support. The tough problems get sent to me as the final tier. 😊
One of our biggest challenges is when students bring in devices that broadcast a WiFi signal. This causes the university provided WiFi to be not-so-great for others around them. Can any of you relate to this and how do you handle it?
Feel free to introduce yourself and talk about some of the challenge/adventures you face at your university.
