Subject: Support and Resources for Students Affected by Events in Iran
Dear students,
We are aware of the escalating tensions in Iran. We recognize that these events may be deeply distressing, particularly for students who are from the region, have family or loved ones there, or are feeling emotionally impacted by the uncertainty and violence.
If you are currently in the region, or if these events are affecting your safety, access to services, or ability to continue your studies, we encourage you to contact your faculty or the UM International Centre as soon as possible at international(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:international@umanitoba.ca>. Our team can work with you to explore academic flexibility, remote learning options, or deferrals where appropriate.
We also encourage you to stay informed by following travel advisories and safety information issued by the Government of Canada at https://travel.gc.ca/destinations/iran.
If you require emergency consular assistance, you may contact the Global Affairs Canada Emergency Watch and Response Centre (available 24/7): +1-613-996-8885 (call collect where available) or sos(a)international.gc.ca<mailto:sos@international.gc.ca>.
At the University of Manitoba, we care about you and are committed to ensuring that all members of our diverse community feel supported, heard, and safe. If you are feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or simply need someone to talk to, support is available. While some supports may be limited by institutional policies and available resources, we are actively exploring avenues to assist students in distress. Depending on individual needs, supports may include referrals to:
* Financial Aid and Awards<https://umanitoba.ca/financial-aid-and-awards> (including emergency funding and advising)
* Cashier's Office / Student Accounts (payment planning and account-related inquiries): StudentPayment(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:StudentPayment@umanitoba.ca>
* Student Counselling Centre (SCC)<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/counselling-resources-students> (mental health and wellness support)
* Student Services at Bannatyne Campus<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/student-services-bannatyne-campus> (SSBC)
* Student Advocacy and Case Management<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/academic-supports/student-advocacy>
* Spiritual Care<https://umanitoba.ca/student-supports/spiritual-services> and Multi-Faith Centre
* Academic advising and faculty-based supports
* Immigration advising through the International Centre, including guidance related to enrolment status
* Employment-related resources, including guidance on campus and off-campus work eligibility, and referrals to centralized job postings and career tools such as UM Connect, faculty-based job boards, and other University employment listings.
We also encourage members of our university community to approach one another with compassion, empathy, and care during times like these.
Please feel free to share this information with others who may benefit.
Sincerely,
UM International Centre

Sent on behalf of Dr. Karen Duncan,
The James Burns Leadership Institute is hosting a Governance Workshop for students on Saturday, November 8, from 9 AM-1 PM.
We first hosted this workshop last spring, and the feedback was VERY positive. We are delighted that some participants have already joined boards, and I'm confident many more will do so in the future!
The workshop covers the fundamentals of Board governance, offers guidance on how to find a Board and the questions to ask before joining, and provides an opportunity for peer learning as young Directors share their Board experiences. The workshop supports leadership and career development, while promoting good governance for organizations ranging from business and professional groups to health and education organizations to front-line social services.
We would so appreciate it if you/your team would share this opportunity broadly with your students. Like last year, we hope to see students from many faculties participate. Thanks very much for helping us get the word out!
Registration is open now and closes on October 31. Link: https://forms.office.com/r/tciCy11U8T

Good Afternoon,
As you prepare for your courses this fall and winter, and for those who are advisors to students, there are a few resources that may be helpful. There are a couple that will assist with syllabus creation, as well as information in the academic guide and the graduate studies hub that will assist in finding policies that relate to teaching and advising. These links can also be further explored for additional information and topics that may be helpful.

We are in the process of updating the program handbook, I've attached a copy of the 2024-25 version here, when the new one is finalized we'll share that version.
NOTE: my apologies to anyone who may have received this twice, it's because of 2 group lists (teaching and advising) and many of you are both.
Wishing everyone a great start to the new academic year!
