Good afternoon DH2, I just wanted to remind you that we have no recorded lecture in HYGN 1292 this week. We will start the class with our first quiz of the term, and then we will discuss the process for your Amalgam Competency Test next week. Following that, you will have the remainder of the morning to complete your amalgam lab requirements. For those of you who are looking for some additional practice in preparation for the Amalgam competency test next week, I will place some additional practice teeth in your mailboxes. From Benign to Malignant: Top 10 Oral Pathology Findings Every Clinician Should Know This presentation will provide a brief exploration of common oral pathology findings, ranging from benign to malignant lesions. We will cover the diagnosis and management of various benign conditions, including oral ulcerations, lichen planus, geographic tongue, pigmented lesions, and orofacial swellings and lumps. The session will conclude with a focus on pre-malignant and malignant lesions, including leukoplakia and squamous cell carcinoma (SCC), highlighting red flags for clinicians to watch for as well as brief discussion on management and treatment strategies. About Dr Kadhim Dr. Mohamad Kadhim is a board-certified specialist in Oral Medicine & Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, as well as a fellow of the Royal College of Dentists of Canada. Currently, he holds the position of Assistant Professor in the Department of Dental Diagnostic & Surgical Sciences at the University of Manitoba, where he teaches both undergraduate and graduate students, as well as residents. Dr. Kadhim's educational journey began with a Bachelor's degree in science from the University of Manitoba. Following this, he served four years in the Canadian Forces in Winnipeg and Shilo. He obtained a dental degree from Trinity College Dublin, Ireland in 2019. Driven by a passion for dentistry, medicine and pathology, he completed a four-year hospital residency program in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology at the University of British Columbia and Vancouver General Hospital. Dr. Kadhim has returned to Winnipeg, where he is eager to serve his community. IPE Session January 24, 2025, 3-5 PM: Student Materials

Hello DH 2, On Friday, January 24th, you have an in-person interprofessional education (IPE) activity from 3-5 pm. The session takes place on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, which is part of your DipDH program, we continue to explore relationship-centered care/services, team communication, and team function, three of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative <https://cihc-cpis.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CIHC-Competency-Framework.…> (2024) team-based collaborative competencies. For a review of these competencies, see UML module you completed in the fall: "Introduction to Collaborative Team-Based Care". On January 24th, your IPE learning team will meet a meet two patient or family advisors from the patient engagement program with Shared Health and or the Center for Healthcare Innovation. They will share their lived experiences. As a team, you will have the opportunity to listen to their stories and engage with them through a question and answer session. In advance of the learning activity, please read the following poem (attached to this email): Metersky, K. (2022). Theatre E is at the end of the hall joining CoRS with Dentistry. Apotex is the Pharmacy building on the south side of McDermot Avenue. * Rooms starting with “0” are on the lower level; rooms starting with “1” are on the first level, etc. Consider being your team’s note-taker for the IPE session. Your team will be provided with a hardcopy of a ‘student questions template’ which you will use to articulate team questions and rationale for the questions. Note-taking simulates team meeting notes and as we know document, document, document is an important motto to uphold for quality assurance and improvement. You will give the document to the IPE facilitators at the end of the session. HYGN 1292 - First class tomorrow

Good afternoon DH2, Happy New Year! I hope you are all doing well and easing into the Winter term nicely. I am looking forward to seeing you tomorrow for our first HYGN 1292: Pre-Clinical Restorative Techniques for Dental Hygienists class. Our class tomorrow will run from 9:00am-12:50pm in Hart Lab. Don't worry, we will take a couple of breaks in there as well. In preparation for tomorrow's session, please dress in standard laboratory attire (scrubs, hair tied back, etc.) and bring your loupes, and metal jaw (the one you used in pre-clinical to attach the dentoform to the station head). Welcome back to Term 2, 2025

All Students, Welcome back, I hope you all had a great holiday and enjoyed a bit of a break from the college. As we get back into clinic, I would implore you all to refresh your mind on clinic protocols and remember the requirements for the pre-clinical and senior labs to be kept clean. Points to remember as we go into the next term: 1. There was a localized flood in a few of the quiet room operatories over the break resulting in some damage. The quiet rooms have been cordoned off and additional dental chairs within the Main Clinic have been opened to accommodate. 2. The operatories that can now accept the Emerald S scanner are units 37, 36 and 16. 3. The Primescan is not yet functional so if you need to switch operatories to use the Emerald S scanners please let Katalina Munoz know. 4. For D3 students on scanning rotation you must use the Emerald S scanners even if the Primescan is functioning. 5. Ensure you are checking in and out your patients in axium. 6. D3 and D4 patients with treatment that is suitable for D2 students have been assigned to the D2 patient pool, you will see this in axium. Hold off on treatment that is D2 level care. Talk to your PCC if you have questions. 7. Hygiene Recall Rotation: remember to send out a general referral for undergrad student assignment and to have the interprofessional note completed at the session. A number of referrals have been missed. 8. We are still waiting for many of the CDCP pre-authorizations to be returned. Your PCC should be sending you an axium email to let you know if treatment has been approved. A significant number of pre-authorizations have be denied, you may need to start having discussions with your patients as to what treatment they would like to proceed with due to the denial of coverage by CDCP. 9. If a procedure code is changed you must update the treatment plan. Copy and paste the entire treatment plan, make the corrections and then deactivate the old treatment plan. 10. D2, D3, and D4 students remember to add the planned treatment you anticipate doing at the appointment when booking patients. This is essential to instructor assignment and for the clinic mapping. 11.
