URGENT - Student Kit Clearance

D1 Class, Dental students have two sections to the student Dental Kit. Items that are student owned, such as your handpieces and articulator, and kit items that are leased. Historically dental students owned all of their kit, and the cost was significant. To put this into perspective. When I went to dental school, I purchased my entire dental kit. With this purchase I bought thousands of burs, teeth, and other consumables way above what I could ever use in a lifetime. Most of this was so that I would never run out and secondly the unit volume of dental supplies meant that if I only needed 10 of one item I purchase 100 in my kit because that item could only be ordered in 100 units. Ultimately, I graduated with a larger dental kit debt than was needed to survive dental school and although I thought I might be able to use some of the supplies in private practice or sell what I did not use it just was not the reality. Over a decade ago this college, in response to ever increasing costs to the students, developed a system whereby students would purchase key dental kit items and then lease more consumable based items. This allowed for bulk purchasing for the college so that cost savings could be handed down to the students and more customizing of unit volumes dispensed to minimize waste for students. The downside was that this process required more staff to put the kits together and timely to distribute and return each year but ultimately the cost to students would be minimized. Each year we meet with all course coordinators to review kit item requirements to complete each course. Once we know the basic course kit needs, we then increase the amount significantly to allow for practice and learning errors. We are generous with what we include in the leased items and each year students hand back what they have not used in the kit which is restocked and handed to the next student. There are enough supplies in each student kit to support pre-clinical learning, practice time, plus more, plus more, plus more. Therefore, at the end of the year you should be handing in your dental kits with items still in stock. Appreciating that after the pandemic our dental kit costs have increased by 30-40% we have managed to keep the dental kit prices down by being as generous as possible with the dental kit while allowing students who require additional items to purchase these at a reduced cost. Understand though that your kit has been stocked well above what you reasonably should need already. You do not own all of the consumables in your kit. You are leasing these items and what you do not need we expect you to return. Ultimately if you wish to continue handing in your D1 kit with everything stripped from them including all of the denture teeth on the typodont you will be setting up the dental kit system as it is to fail. This will result in us having to look at either significantly increasing the cost of the dental kit lease or move to a fully owned kit which will be even more costly for students. I ask you to look at the big picture here. This is your college. We operate at a loss each year as the cost of dental school is expensive and you only need to look at the cost of dental education in the US to appreciate that your educational costs are being supplemented. The college does not make money on your dental kits; in fact, it costs us money to try to save you money with this system. Hoarding all of the items in your dental kit and handing in your kit empty of all consumables will only hurt the college and other students in the long run. I ask you to think about what you are doing, what is reasonable, and what the long-term results will be. Dr. Reeve Trenna M. In the past, dental and dental hygiene students have participated in the Ndinawemaaganag Summer Opportunities. You join students from across the RFHS to participate in community-led initiatives/activities with 1st Nation communities. There are several opportunities spread throughout June-August. Applications are now open for "Ndinawemaaganag" a unique opportunity to participate in an interprofessional community engagement experience within a rural or remote Indigenous community in summer 2025. https://forms.office.com/r/jijtjgTbAd The program was named Ndinawemaaganag by Elder Margaret Lavallee and translates to "All My Relations." This meaning speaks to the connections the students make with the community, each other, and the land and guides the interprofessional and social accountability opportunities within this program for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The experiences are all directed by the community partners to provide opportunities for students to learn about their community, its people, and health and well-being. Some of the experiences are anchored in a Sundance ceremony, while others include opportunities to spend time in their nursing stations and health centres. All experiences include land based experiences. Some experiences involve camping with the community while in others, students will stay in cabins on the water (and in some you'll do both!). All communities have road access, however in some scenarios students may fly. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations, ceremonial contributions etc) are covered by the RBC Experiential Learning Travel Fund. Sundances:<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sundances-offer-students-crash-course-in-culture/> For the various sundances, we play important helper roles (picking/preparing medicines, cutting trees, building the lodge, helping the kitchen staff with communal meals, assisting with cleanup). In most cases we camp with the community, however there is an option to commute to the Blacksmith Sundance (near Spruce Woods) or stay in a hotel in The Pas for the Opaskwayak. Ideally students will be available from early Friday morning to help build with lodge and then Saturday and Sunday to support/observe/participate in other ceremonies within the sundance. * Blacksmith Sundance (Spruce Woods): June 12-15 * Opaskwayak Sundance (OCN/The Pas): July 3-6 * Shallow Bay Sundance (Grand Rapids): July 10-13 * Sakitowin Sundance (Cross Lake/Pimicikamak): August 14-17 Longer community experiences: There are communities offering one or two-week opportunities: Norway House: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend time in the newly built Health Centre of Excellence, in community programing, and in land-based experiences. Expect to spend time on and around the water and to be in ceremony. Students will be in community for the Indigenous Peoples day. Accommodations are a cabin on the water. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Grand Rapids: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend the first week at the nursing station and with the community health programs. The weekend will spent at the Shallow Bay sundance. Week two is scheduled based on opportunities available and student preference (may involve the nursing station, a land based camp, treaty days etc). Accommodations are a cabin on the water during the week and camping on the weekend. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Tobacco camp (SERDC)<https://serdc.mb.ca/health/commercial-tobacco-reduction-strategy> in the Whiteshell: Students will be helpers at a camp for youth where the focus is to provide smoking cessation strategies, teachings re: traditional uses of tobacco/cultural practices, and harm reduction/health promotion strategies. Youth come from the communities in the South East Region to Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell; students will stay in cabins. * Norway House: June 16-27 * Grand Rapids: July 7-18, 2025 * Tobacco Camp: August 11-15 Why is this being offered? The RFHS is committed to offering interprofessional education to enhance the provision of integrated care, and is dedicated to actively building and enhancing partnerships to contribute to the communities it serves, including Indigenous Health partnerships, for collaborative care. What costs will be covered? Costs for students' travel, food and accommodations will be covered by the RBC Health Sciences Student Travel Initiative. What is the deadline to apply? The first deadline to apply will be Monday April 7th at which point Lisa will begin confirming matches. The application will continue to stay open as long as spaces remain for students. Where will students stay? How will they get there? Depending on the experience, students will either stay in the professional accommodations at the health centre, a hotel, or a cabin in the area. If attending a sundance it is likely you will camp with the community. Camping equipment is available if needed. Students will either fly or drive to the experience; carpooling will occur where possible. Will students receive credit for this experience? In most cases these experiences do not contribute to a specific course, however can contribute to your U of M Experiential Record. For UGME students, the equivalent of a 2-week experience is approved as an "Early Exposure". Students who complete this interprofessional practice experience will also receive a certificate of participation upon request. Who can apply? Students enrolled in the health profession programs in any of the five Colleges of the RFHS who have completed at least one term of their program are eligible are prioritized. With each ceremony done, there were many lessons to be learned, but one important lesson was how well the non-pharmacological intervention assisted the Indigenous people in healing and coping with their grief. These ceremonies were beautiful and moving, and I felt honored to be a part of them. The value of such spiritual practice was clear to me and helped show me that there is a great need for our society to support people to look after their own and their community's spiritual wellbeing. This weekend was one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my time at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. There were many powerful learnings that I would have never experienced inside a classroom nor reading through books. It was evident to me that a sense of belonging in community, language, culture and traditions have a huge role to play in healing. If you are considering this experience but are on the fence, just go for it... this experience has been one of the most valuable to me as a person and professional, as it has given me insight into Indigenous culture, health care in the North, and interprofessional practice that I could not have gotten anywhere else. Hello Dent 1, On Friday, January 24th, you have an in-person interprofessional education (IPE) activity from 3-5 pm. The session takes place on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, which is part of your Dentistry program (Dent 1202 Early Clinical Experiences), we continue to explore relationship-centered care/services, team communication, and team function, three of the Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative <https://cihc-cpis.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/06/CIHC-Competency-Framework.…> (2024) team-based collaborative competencies. For a review of these competencies, see UML module you completed in the fall: "Introduction to Collaborative Team-Based Care". On January 24th, your IPE learning team will meet a meet two patient or family advisors from the patient engagement program with Shared Health and or the Center for Healthcare Innovation. They will share their lived experiences. As a team, you will have the opportunity to listen to their stories and engage with them through a question and answer session. The different date has the potential to afford an unfair advantage to a student. There are currently 144 questions available in 8 testlets in English and French using the released NDEB OSCE templates. As the NDEB has transitioned to the new VOSCE exam in March 2023, the Mock OSCE exam site will still be relevant due to the extended match format questions that will continue to be in the VOSCE. Since the Mock OSCE exam site was launched in October, 2011 there have been 4,089,370 page views and 43,083 users to the site as of Dec. 31, 2022. Not every student may choose to access the Mock OSCE exam site, but, they all should all have the option to do so. There is no cost to access the site. Loupe Fitting Tomorrow August 27

Hello D1, There seems to be a mis-communication about tomorrows Loupe Fittings. Please ignore the e-mail sent out by Jean Lyon regarding the 2:30 start time. Loupe fittings for D1 have been scheduled in the morning as per the schedule I circulated and what is listed on UM Learn - THERE HAS BEEN NO CHANGE (other than the move of the clinic tour session of tomorrow morning). There are loupe fittings in the afternoon for DH2 and the new IDDP Students as well as an opportunity for Faculty to have repairs or adjustments made to their loupes. However, your times stay the same in the morning. Sorry for the Confusion! Good afternoon, The Immunization Program has advised the following: Our UM Learn modules are now available for student's to complete, all they need to do is log in to their UM Learn account. The course name is: Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Student Immunization Orientation. If you could kindly advise your students that these can now be completed, that would be much appreciated. The deadline to complete this is September 30th. They should automatically be registered, but sometimes this isn't the case and some students may have to search for the course manually. Welcome Letter and Fall 2024 Schedule

Hello and Welcome to the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry! We will meet officially on Monday August 12, during the Welcome Session Orientation with the Associate Dean Academic at 10:00 am, D016, Hamilton Theatre. However, please note that I do the scheduling for the College and attached is a copy of your schedule for Fall 2024. Note that I will not be sending updates to the Excel schedule, but be making updates in UM Learn. Former U of M students, who have previously used Aurora to view your class schedule, please note the Aurora calendar does not accurately reflect the full dentistry program and should not be used for planning purposes. Schedules are available on UM Learn. Instructions on how to access these schedules is attached. Note that the schedules are dynamic and items are added as the year progresses (Lunch and Learns, Dean's Meetings, etc.) You are required to attend all Orientation events as scheduled during the first weeks of your program. Please note that the College has an Attendance Policy and that the failure to meet the policy may have academic implications to you. Please also be reminded that students are expected to be available until the end of the last day of the posted examination period for your year and should remember this when making travel arrangements around these schedules. There are also clinical clearances for which you need to complete prior to the end of the academic terms. Further details will be provided. These clearances typically take place the week following the examination period. Winter term schedule information will be circulated later in the term. For a complete list of start and end dates/holidays/exam weeks/etc. please see the U of M Academic Schedule. Dentistry/ has its own dates which differ from most other faculties/schools at the University. Please note that if you fail to obtain a Criminal Record report with the Vulnerable Sector Screening portion completed, you will be required to re-apply, pay for and obtain the correct document. A hold may be placed on your academic record pending the receipt of any outstanding documents. Restrictions on your participation in clinical activities will be imposed until all documents have been received and cleared by the College. Failure to provide these documents by posted deadlines may impact your ability to participate in clinical activities, which may in turn, have academic consequences to you. Please bring your ID Card to the first day of classes (Aug 12 at 10 am). Your card will be collected and provided to the Bannatyne Campus Building Access Coordinator who will program your card to have swipe card access to the building. Your card will be returned by the end of the session. Fee payment deadline for the fall term is October 2, 2024. Fee payment can be done on-line; via TelPay; via drop box at Room 138 University Ctr, Ft. Garry Campus. Both events will start at 6 pm in the Atrium of the Brodie Ctr. Bursary applications are available on-line on AURORA Student (under the Student Awards and Financial Aid tab). Deadline to apply is October 1. All students are required to have current CPR Certification. The CPR certification level required by the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is: Basic Life Support (BLS). This certification must be maintained up to the date of graduation. Please ensure that you provide the Student Services Office with proof of this certification prior to September 15 of each year. Information on how to access some CPR services was sent to you by Jean Lyon during the admission process. You will be issued a mailbox key on the first day of In-Person Orientation (Aug 12), which will remain with you for the four years of the Dental Program. A $25.00 fee will be charged for lost keys. Please check your mailbox on a regular basis! Note that the Dean's Office will charge students $5.00/request to check their mailbox for them, so do not forget your keys! The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is a scent free facility, so please refrain from wearing perfumes or strong odor body sprays/lotions. Unfortunately, parking is not available for students at the Bannatyne Campus. Parking may be rented from the Health Sciences Ctr. by calling 204 787-2715 or visiting their website at www.hsc.mb.ca/mapsParking.html. Local residences often have parking space available. Please bring your short white lab coat with you to the ceremony; be sure to have it unbuttoned and prepared to have it donned on you. You will be called onto the stage by the Dean and a Faculty member will donning your white coat on you and you will then button it up on your own. School of Dental Hygiene DIRECT ENTRY STUDENTS: You will only need to stand when you name is announced, you will not be coming onto the stage. ***Please meet staff from Dentistry & School of Dental Hygiene near the ATM/Answers booth in Brodie Centre no later than 5:15 p.m. so you can be lined-up accordingly and given further instruction.*** Your family and friends are welcome to attend the ceremony, please note that it will commence at 6:00 p.m. sharp.
