It starts promptly at 3 PM. The session takes place on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, we will begin exploring three of the six Canadian Interprofessional Health Collaborative (2024) interprofessional collaboration (IPC) competencies: relationship-focused care/services, team functioning, and communication. You have been placed in an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) learning team representing students 4-5 other health profession programs. All students are early on in their respective programs. Your team will meet two patient or family advisors from the patient engagement program with Shared Health and/or the Center for Healthcare Innovation. They will share their lived experiences. As a team, you will have the opportunity to listen to their stories and engage with them through a team-based question-and-answer session. Please uphold privacy and confidentiality. They may not mention your dentistry in their story; however, the intent of the storytelling is for you and your teammates to discover themes around the three IPC competencies above. For some, the stories shared may be triggering. If you need to, you can leave the room and return when you are ready--know that the people sharing their stories want to do so. Preparation: The first activity you will do with your teammates is to talk briefly about a poem in relation to IPC. Please arrive a few minutes prior to 3 PM so you can locate your team in the room. The module is a pre-reading for all the IPE sessions planned for the year. The module takes approximately two hours to complete. This workshop series offers an opportunity to learn skills for managing stress and maintaining self-care utilizing cognitive, behavioral, and mindfulness strategies. The goal of the workshop is to build resilience and improve learners' capacity to manage stress in a healthy, adaptive way. Hello, I've had some frequent questions about guests and tickets. There are no tickets to purchase for the event, and no set limit of guests you can invite. We just need to keep in mind that there are 60 students and limited space in Brodie Atrium. My suggestion would be that parents/siblings/partners get floor seating; friends and extended family (aunts/uncles/cousins) take additional seating on the 2nd floor of Brodie (actually best view of the stage). The 3rd floor area is also open maybe not the best view as its from the side. Hello D1, I am writing to let you know that the Blanket Exercise/First Contact – Joint session with DH3 that was scheduled on your Excel weekly schedule circulated to you, has been cancelled for August 26th, 9-12. There was an issue with the booked room and we have had to split the sessions up. Your session will be rescheduled on a Tuesday afternoon in the near future, date TBA. I went to give you this information in UM Learn and noted that I had failed to schedule it there…. So hopefully this email will not be too confusing 😊 I will be in touch as soon as we find an alternative date for this session. Dental Stores: D1 & D2 Order Requests

Dear D1 and D2 Students, A new Dental Stores D1 and D2 Order Request process is now in place for the 2026-2027 academic year. Effective immediately, D1 and D2 students are no longer permitted to request items through drop-in visits to Dental Stores. All requests must be submitted using the appropriate Dental Stores Request Form. Request Due Date Students must enter their individual requests on the appropriate D1/D2 Dental Stores Request Sheet by 4:00 p.m. every Tuesday. Requests submitted after this deadline will not be accepted or filled. 2. Credits Students are responsible for tracking their available credits. Dental Stores will apply available credits first, with any additional charges applied to the student's axiUm account. 3. Class Box One student from each class is responsible for: * Picking up the Dental Stores Request Box on Friday by 11:55 a.m. * Returning it to Dental Stores by Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Please note: * If the Request Box and/or associated folders and envelopes are not returned by 4:00 p.m., no orders will be processed for that class during that week. 4. Broken Instruments If you require a replacement instrument: * Place the broken instrument in your individual envelope. * A replacement instrument will be issued, and your axiUm account will be charged accordingly. * Students must remove their identification-colored rings from the broken instrument and transfer them to the replacement instrument. Additional information: * If an instrument breaks during a preclinical lab, please borrow an instrument from a D1 or D2 student. * If an instrument breaks during a practical exam, please contact your Course Coordinator. 5. Carbide Burs Once your bur credits have been used: * Carbide burs must be purchased in bundles. * Students may choose different bur types within the bundle. Example: If you require three (3) 556 burs, please specify which additional two (2) burs you would like included in the bundle. 6. Diamond Burs Diamond burs may be purchased individually. 7. Teeth Exchanges Teeth may be exchanged if they are: * Intact * Free of bur damage Please indicate on the Order Form: Item Returned: Returning 10 intact teeth Exchanging For: 4 × Tooth #46, 4 × Tooth #36, 2 × Tooth #14 8. Exceptional Requests Exceptional requests must be submitted directly to Dental Stores via email: 📧 DentStores(a)umanitoba.ca 9. Bur Exchange (Class-Wide) Classes wishing to exchange burs may do so at the beginning of Term II using the following process: * Sort similar burs into separate ziplock bags. * Label each bag with the total quantity. Example: * All 556 burs in one bag with the total quantity identified. * All 245 burs in another bag with the total quantity identified. The Class Representative must: * Provide Dental Stores with the quantities being returned. * Submit the quantities and types of burs requested in exchange. Exchanged burs will be returned to the Class Representative, who will be responsible for distributing them to students. 10. Equipment Repairs If you require equipment repairs, please email Nik (Equipment Repair Technician) and copy Dental Stores: 📧 DENTEQUIPTECH(a)umanitoba.ca Items requiring repair will only be accepted by Dental Stores after a repair request email has been submitted and acknowledged by Nik. 11. Pricing Requests Dental Stores staff will not provide special pricing quotations for dental items. Welcome to Dentistry - Fall Schedule

Hello D1 and Welcome to the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry! You start on Monday August 17, during the Welcome Session Orientation with the Associate Dean Academic at 10:00 am, D017, Merkeley Theatre (basement of dental building, 780 Bannatyne Ave). Attached is a copy of your schedule for Fall 2026. Former U of M students, who have previously used Aurora to view your class schedule, please note the Aurora calendar does not accurately reflect the full dentistry program and should not be used for planning purposes. Schedules are available on UM Learn. Instructions on how to access these schedules is attached. Note that the schedules are dynamic and items are added as the year progresses (Lunch and Learns, Dean's Meetings, etc.) You are required to attend all Orientation events as scheduled during the first weeks of your program. Please note that the College has an Attendance Policy and that the failure to meet the policy may have academic implications to you. The Office of Professionalism at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences have set up a pizza lunch information session to review some Rady Faculty policy updates regarding the Professional Unsuitability By-Law and revisions to the Prevention of Learner Mistreatment policy (this is not a required orientation). Registration is required for this lunch event. Please use the link below to register. Dentistry/ has its own dates which differ from most other faculties/schools at the University. Please note that if you fail to obtain a Criminal Record report with the Vulnerable Sector Screening portion completed, you will be required to re-apply, pay for and obtain the correct document. A hold may be placed on your academic record pending the receipt of any outstanding documents. Restrictions on your participation in clinical activities will be imposed until all documents have been received and cleared by the College. Failure to provide these documents by posted deadlines may impact your ability to participate in clinical activities, which may in turn, have academic consequences to you. Student ID cards are required for card swipe access to the pre-clinical labs as well as to obtain library privileges and for other University services. You can get a student ID card from the U of M's Registrar's Office at 400 University Ctr., Ft. Garry Campus. Attached is an information sheet on some 'Pop-Up' ID events at Bannatyne Campus for Summer 2026. Please bring your ID Card to the first day of classes (Aug 17 at 10 am). Your card will be collected and provided to the Bannatyne Campus Building Access Coordinator who will program your card to have swipe card access to the building. Your card should be returned by the end of the day. An e-mail notice will be sent out once cards are ready for pick-up. You were sent an e-mail from the Access and Privacy office regarding instructions on how to complete the WRHA PHIA on-line training. While some time has been set aside in your orientation schedule for you to complete this on-line training, it is suggested that you complete it as soon as possible as it gets busy very quickly into the year. Fee payment deadline for the fall term is October 7, 2026. Fee payment can be done on-line; via TelPay; via drop box at Room 138 University Ctr, Ft. Garry Campus. All students are required to have current CPR Certification prior to the start of classes each year. The CPR certification level required by the Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is: Basic Life Support (BLS). This certification must be maintained up to the date of graduation. Please ensure that you provide the Student Services Office with proof of this certification prior to August 17. Information on how to access some CPR services was sent to you by Jean Lyon during the admission process. You will be issued a mailbox key on the first day of In-Person Orientation (Aug 17), which will remain with you for the four years of the Dental Program. A $25.00 fee will be charged for lost keys. Please check your mailbox on a regular basis! Note that the Dean's Office will charge students $5.00/request to check their mailbox for them, so do not forget your keys! The Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry is a scent free facility, so please refrain from wearing perfumes or strong odor body sprays/lotions. Unfortunately, parking is not available for students at the Bannatyne Campus. Hello, Please see the announcement below, which I am forwarding to you on behalf of Lisa Mendez, the Collaborative Health Care Practice Lead with the Office of Interprofessional Collaboration. It is a follow-up to the October 7th, 2026, announcement of this opportunity. Some of the opportunities are full, but there is still an opportunity to join other ones; hence, the application date remains open. In the past, dental and dental hygiene students have participated in the Ndinawemaaganag Summer Opportunities. You join students from across the RFHS to participate in community-led initiatives/activities with rural and remote Indigenous communities. There are several opportunities spread throughout June-August. Importantly, should you want to put your name forward to participate (i.e., email Lisa Mendez as described below), you must make sure that the dates of the opportunity do not impact any scheduled activities within Dentistry and Dental Hygiene (e.g., orientation week). Applications are still being accepted for "Ndinawemaaganag" a unique opportunity to participate in an interprofessional community engagement experience within a rural or remote Indigenous community in summer 2026. While I'm no longer accepting applications for "Tobacco Camp" and the 2 week experience in Grand Rapids there are still lots of opportunities (see below). Applications will be reviewed/students will be notified as they are received: Ndinawemaaganag (All my relations) Summer 2026 - Fill out form<https://forms.office.com/r/ZkDAAS6ShJ> The program was named Ndinawemaaganag by Elder Margaret Lavallee and translates to "All My Relations." This meaning speaks to the connections the students make with the community, each other, and the land and guides the interprofessional and social accountability opportunities within this program for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The experiences are all directed by the community partners to provide opportunities for students to learn about their community, its people, and health and well-being. Some of the experiences are anchored in a Sundance ceremony, while others include opportunities to spend time in their nursing stations and health centres. All experiences include land based experiences. Some experiences involve camping with the community while in others, students will stay in cabins on the water (and in some you'll do both!). All communities have road access, however in some scenarios students may fly. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations, ceremonial contributions etc) are covered by the RBC Experiential Learning Travel Fund. Sundances:<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sundances-offer-students-crash-course-in-culture/> For the various sundances, we play important helper roles (picking/preparing medicines, cutting trees, building the lodge, helping the kitchen staff with communal meals, assisting with cleanup). In most cases we camp with the community, however there is an option to commute to the Blacksmith Sundance (near Spruce Woods) or stay in a hotel in The Pas for the Opaskwayak. Ideally students will be available from early Friday morning to help build with lodge and then Saturday and Sunday to support/observe/participate in other ceremonies within the sundance. * Blacksmith Sundance (Spruce Woods): June 11-14, 2026 * Opaskwayak Sundance (OCN/The Pas): July 2-5, 2026 * Shallow Bay Sundance (Grand Rapids): July 9-12, 2026 * York Landing Sundance (York Landing) August 6-9, 2026 * Sakitowin Sundance (Cross Lake/Pimicikamak): August 13-16, 2026 * Two Spirit Sundance (Near Portage): August 20-23, 2026 Longer community experiences: There are communities offering one or two-week opportunities: Norway House: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend time in the newly built Health Centre of Excellence, in community programing, and in land-based experiences. Expect to spend time on and around the water and to be in ceremony. Students will be in community for the Indigenous Peoples day. Accommodations are a cabin on the water. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available to accommodate clinical/academic schedules. Grand Rapids: CURRENTLY FULL Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend the first week at the nursing station and with the community health programs. The weekend will spent at the Shallow Bay sundance. Week two is scheduled based on opportunities available and student preference (may involve the nursing station, a land based camp, treaty days etc). Accommodations are a cabin on the water during the week and camping on the weekend. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Norway House Cree Nation: June 15-26, 2026 Grand Rapids: July 6-17, 2026 Why is this being offered? The RFHS is committed to offering interprofessional education to enhance the provision of integrated care, and is dedicated to actively building and enhancing partnerships to contribute to the communities it serves, including Indigenous Health partnerships, for collaborative care. What costs will be covered? Costs for students' travel, food and accommodations will be covered by the RBC Health Sciences Student Travel Initiative. What is the deadline to apply? The first deadline to apply will be Monday April 6th at which point Lisa will begin confirming matches. The application will continue to stay open as long as spaces remain for students. Where will students stay? How will they get there? Depending on the experience, students will either stay in the professional accommodations at the health centre, a hotel, or a cabin in the area. If attending a sundance it is likely you will camp with the community. Camping equipment is available if needed. Students will either fly or drive to the experience; carpooling will occur where possible. Will students receive credit for this experience? In most cases these experiences do not contribute to a specific course. For UGME students, the experience is approved as an "Early Exposure" if the hour requirement is met. Who can apply? Students enrolled in the health profession programs in any of the five Colleges of the RFHS who have completed at least one term of their program are eligible are prioritized. With each ceremony done, there were many lessons to be learned, but one important lesson was how well the non-pharmacological intervention assisted the Indigenous people in healing and coping with their grief. These ceremonies were beautiful and moving, and I felt honored to be a part of them. The value of such spiritual practice was clear to me and helped show me that there is a great need for our society to support people to look after their own and their community's spiritual wellbeing. This weekend was one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my time at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. There were many powerful learnings that I would have never experienced inside a classroom nor reading through books. It was evident to me that a sense of belonging in community, language, culture and traditions have a huge role to play in healing. If you are considering this experience but are on the fence, just go for it... this experience has been one of the most valuable to me as a person and professional, as it has given me insight into Indigenous culture, health care in the North, and interprofessional practice that I could not have gotten anywhere else.
