How long does it take for Praziquantel to kick in?

Praziquantel is a powerful antiparasitic medication commonly used to treat infections caused by tapeworms, flukes, and other parasitic worms in both humans and animals. The time it takes for Praziquantel to start working depends on several factors, including the type of parasite, the dosage administered, and the individual’s metabolism. However, in most cases, Praziquantel begins to take effect within 1 to 3 hours after ingestion. Once absorbed into the bloodstream, Praziquantel rapidly increases the permeability of the parasite’s cell membranes to calcium ions. This causes the worms to experience paralysis and detachment from the intestinal walls. Eventually, the parasites are destroyed and expelled from the body through normal bowel movements. Many patients notice relief from symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, or discomfort within a few days of starting treatment, although the complete elimination of parasites may take several days. In some infections, such as schistosomiasis or liver fluke infestations, a full course of treatment may be necessary for complete parasite clearance. The effectiveness and onset of action can also vary depending on whether the medication is taken with food, as absorption improves significantly when consumed with a meal. It’s important to follow the prescribed dosage carefully, as taking less than the recommended amount may reduce effectiveness, while excessive dosing could lead to side effects like dizziness or stomach upset. Overall, Praziquantel starts acting quickly, typically within hours, but the noticeable results—such as symptom relief and parasite removal—may take a few days. For best results, patients should complete the entire treatment as directed by their healthcare provider and maintain good hygiene to prevent reinfection. Sept 19th, 3-5 PM Interprofessional Education Session: Preparation Information

Dear Dent 1 On Friday, September 19th, 3-5 pm, you have a scheduled in-person interprofessional education (IPE) activity embedded in RSTD 1550 Intro to Dentistry. The session takes place on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, we will begin exploring the interprofessional collaboration (IPC) competencies of relationship-focused care/services, team functioning, and communication. You have been placed in an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) learning team representing at least six other health professionals. Your team will meet two patient or family advisors from the patient engagement program with Shared Health and or the Center for Healthcare Innovation. They will share their lived experiences. As a team, you will have the opportunity to listen to their stories and engage with them through a question and answer session. Please uphold privacy and confidentiality. Most likely they will not mention oral health in their story, but the intent of the story-telling is for you and your team mates to discover themes around team communication, team function, and relationship focused care/services, including patient-centered care. Certainly do explore their experience with oral health, particularly if you know that there is a relationship between oral health and their health story. Be an oral health advocate. Preparation: In advance of the learning activity, as you know from the orientation session held earlier, be sure to complete the UML online module introducing collaborative team-based care. The module is the pre-reading for the IPE session. The module takes approximately two hours to complete. There are six quizzes and six optional reflections not included in the two hours. Schonwetter, course coordinator of RSTD 1550 will be informed that you completed the module, as well about your attendance and participation throughout the session. I provided an orientation to the IPE activities a couple of weeks ago in DENT 1550. Dr. Schönwetter uploaded the Ppt of that orientation in your UML course. The Sept 19th, IPE session takes place on the Bannatyne campus. During this mandatory IPE session, we will begin exploring the interprofessional collaboration (IPC) competencies of relationship-focused care/services, team functioning, and communication. You have been placed in an interprofessional collaborative (IPC) learning team representing at least three health professionals who will be from one of the seven participating programs: midwifery, pharmacy, physiotherapy, dental hygiene, physician assistant, and respiratory therapy, and dentistry. Pre-readings/preparation: In advance of Sept 19th, you need to complete the UML online module: Introduction to Collaborative Team-based Care, which introduces the six competencies all health professions share about collaborative team-based care. The module is a mandatory and pre-reading for the IPE sessions embedded in the Dentistry program. The module will take you approximately 2 hours to complete. The ceremony starts at 6:00pm, Dental Hygiene will enter first followed by Dentistry and then IDDP students. DENT 1- Credits

Hello Dent 1 students, It was so nice to meet you all at Kit Issue! If you are ever in need of extra supplies or replacement instruments throughout the year, come see Jenna or myself down in Dental Stores. Any items that need to be purchased you will sign for, and it will be added to your Axium account as a running tab that will be asked to be cleared at the end of each term. Payments are only accepted upstairs with the Patient Care Coordinators (PCC's) at clinic reception. In your kits, you have been allotted a set number of items/consumables for the year based on the recommendations by the Course Coordinators. The College has offered some of those items to you by means of credits as a buffer for the year if you find yourself depleted of your kit stock. We will track your credits down here in Dental Stores, if those credits are depleted, they are available to purchase. The Frasaco Practice teeth are still able to be traded, tooth for a tooth - if they are intact, clean and unprepped. Burs can be traded as well - a class representative will be required to collate the students' burs into individual bags and make arrangements with Dr. Boorberg for the traded burs. The below chart will outline your credits and costs if purchase is necessary. HSC Safety and Security Drop-In Meetings

Message from Dr. Chris Christodoulou, Interim President and CEO of Shared Health Critical discussions with multiple partners to address the safety concerns surrounding Health Sciences Centre continue. The safety of our staff, patients, and visitors is paramount, and we have a shared responsibility of ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone who walks through our doors. As we move forward, we recognize that the most meaningful progress will come from working together, uniting our voices and expertise. We must listen carefully to one another and, most importantly, honour the lived experiences of those who are on the frontlines at our facilities who have witnessed firsthand the impacts of the current challenges. We do not take this situation lightly. The road ahead may be complex, but I believe by collaborating and fostering an environment of openness and respect, we can drive the positive change needed to improve the safety and well-being of everyone at Health Sciences Centre. This is why I would like to invite you to be part of this ongoing dialogue. Your insights, concerns, and ideas are invaluable as we work together to chart a successful path forward. We need to hear from you. Over the next few weeks, members of the HSC executive and I want to meet with you to engage in candid, meaningful discussions about your safety. We are hoping to connect with you by at drop-in sessions - please see below for dates and times. Coffee will be provided. Please join me and members of HSC executive for one-on-one discussions on how we can best work together to address these challenges.
