I would like to meet with you and your class for 20 minutes on Wed., Sept 15, 2025 from 1:30 - 1:50 in Garvin Theatre (D018).
The purpose is to conduct a needs assessment of students in terms of AI use for learning. I have done this with the D1s, D3s, and D4s and wish to invite your class to do the same. The survey takes on average 10 -12 minutes to complete.

Artificial Intelligence Use by Dental Hygiene and Dentistry Students (July 2025)
My name is Dr. Dieter Schonwetter and as the Director of Academic Services and Professor at the College of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba, I work closely with dental and dental hygiene students and academics, fostering their academic and professional development. My research focuses on the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, exploring innovative strategies to enhance education and professional growth within dentistry and beyond. I wish to invite you to participate in this study on artificial intelligence used by students and academics.
Purpose & Benefits: This survey examines faculty experiences, attitudes, and needs regarding AI tools (e.g., ChatGPT, Grammarly) in teaching and research. By exploring use across universities and disciplines, the study aims to guide the development of AI resources, training, and policies to support educators and researchers. Your insights will help shape AI's role in higher education, enhancing support, resources, and policies.
Participation: Participation is voluntary. By completing the survey, you provide your consent.
Confidentiality: No identifying information including email nor IP addresses are collected. Responses are confidential. No direct identifiers are collected. Only group-level analyses will be reported.
Ethical Approval: Approved by the University of Manitoba Health Research Ethics Board (HS26761; H2025:002).
Survey Details: The survey includes 86 quick-response and 8 open-ended questions on AI use in teaching and research which will take approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Consent: By completing this survey, you agree to participate and allow your responses to be used for the purposes outlined.
Definitions:
* AI tools: Applications like ChatGPT, Grammarly, or GitHub CoPilot used for academic tasks. * AI resources: Materials or guides supporting effective AI integration in academia. * AI training: Instruction on using AI tools for teaching, research, or administrative tasks.
