If you experience a no show/late cancellation or are unable to book a patient please look for another student to assist at the beginning of session. While you do not accumulate grades for assisting you can learn a great deal by going through the motions of comprehensive treatment planning or formative treatment with your colleague. If the Floor Lead determines that there is no need for additional assistants, it is at this point you can request to work on the Photography Assignment but the first priority in clinic is always providing consistent, high-quality clinical care to our patients.

It is essential that you plan your radiographs properly once you and your instructor have prescribed them. This means that you have to fill out the RADREQ form in its entirety and then in the patient's EHR you must plan the codes according to the total number of images you will take. For example, If you are taking 4 BW and 3 PA, you will plan 7 images (02117). The RADREQ form and the codes must be swiped by your instructor before you make an appointment in Radiology. If you do not do these steps correctly, Radiology will not allow you to take your images and will send you back to clinic to complete what is necessary. In addition, do not forget to complete your Radiographic Findings which must be swiped at the end of session.

Finally, it is essential to remember that the individuals under your care are your patients - not the previous' provider. This means that you are responsible for comprehensively treatment planning the patient in their current condition. As I mentioned in class, you may use outstanding treatment as a guide in your treatment planning but it is up to you to ensure that the procedures you are planning are still, in fact, indicated for the patient. For example, if the patient is planned for an nsRCT on tooth X, you must still confirm this and determine the current endodontic diagnosis of tooth X through endodontic testing and establish that it is still restorable and verify it is periodontally stable. For this reason, it also means that you must get the appropriate consults before you can plan the treatment.

Do not rush your treatment planning appointments. In D3, especially at the beginning of the year, treatment plans often take 2 appointments unless they are simple and straight forward. For CTPs which require an additional appointment, simply put the treatment planning code (01201 or 01201U) In Process and schedule another appointment with the patient. We must ensure we have gathered all the required data to devise a comprehensive plan that allows us to continue to provide clinical excellence through evidence-based practice.
