You are absolutely correct, once a duplicated number is entered, it will pop up "Number already exists, do you want to go to record?????
As long as you type "key Unique 1"
A Key Unique number can be altered if it was entered by mistake but if you select the ID as AUTO select, then that number which is generated by the computer can not be altered.

Pedro:
Am I incorrect in opinionating that actually KEY UNIQUE gives you all answers as well, that an identifier value is already in existence and in which record it is and allowing you to go to precisely that previous record.

Gilles,
All the anterior answers are correct. Hoewever I have a preference for another command:
idnumber autosearch list end
This command does not exactly the same thing as key unique. I have this preference because key unique does not allow U to enter a previous entered number and does not warn you which record this number is. Autoserach warns that this number is already in the dataset and gives you the option to edit this one or to generate a new one. This is handy when the mistake is in the first one. For example... suppose you are entering data of questionnaire number 12, but by mistake you enter 22 at the ID number. When you get on 22, key unique only tells you U cant enter 22, becasue it is already in the databank. Autosearch list will show you the record with ID 22 for you to compare and see if this is the same you entering and allow you to go to this 22 and change it to 12 if necessary.
Also, you may use them both at the same check if u like ...
id key unique autosearch list end
Best regards, Pedro Emmanuel

Hello all,
I tryed to install Epidata in Ubuntu today and it seems to work fine at first. I looked at the web page and old messages at the list but latest one were from 2004. The installation looked pretty simlpe with wine already installed. Just click on it and wine seems to do the rest. Choose the directory as in windows .... press continue...
At first it seems a little weird ... the installation and the program were not in portuguese but in english. There is a lot of violations errors when opening and closing files and sometimes epidata just dont open the files. Some simple commands in windows such as Ctrl+Z dont work.
I try to import a simple dataset from a csv file with 6 variables and 45 observations and the same error did not allow me to complete the import.... the ID variable is not compatible. The ID variable was a number from 1 to 45. I try even to delete some variables eand most of observations to make it simple but it didnt work out.
Does anyone have recent experiences with Epidata in Linux? Good or bad?
