One further aspect of select: One user wrote

The last data set I worked on included 5,227 records. The data base was originally on Excel, then I imported it in DBase

and then in Epi Data. For variables with only one character (for instance sex: M or F), I have in fact 12 chararcters. So I could not select the variable sex = "M" without the "trim" gimmick. So

doing

select trim (sex)="M" now it works beautifully. Thanks a lot

So the select example should be extended to say: * if imported data and select is not working, try trim() on your field, e.g.: select trim (sex)="M"
