EpiData Entry and multiple simultaneous users
Hi there, I have multiple data entry clerks entering data on different Epidata REC files. Because of data entry back-log I wish to get additional staff to enter data on the said REC files simultaneously. I have overcome this problem by "splitting" (more like copying the file REC to another terminal) the database REC file (with its CHK and QES) so that 2 staff could enter the data at same time. The problem is that when we assign a unique studyid, in say RECfile#1, RECfile#2 can't counter check if that studyid is being duplicated. Could someone show me how to share a common REC file for simultaneous data entry? I know Epidata can't be run through a network server, or linked to a server database, like MS SQL sever, or MySQL databases. If it can could you show me how to do this? or even place the REC files on the network drive and share them for data entry, is this possible? How? Regards,SK

Hi Claire,
At each time you finish entering a record, you will be asked "do you want the record on disk?" When you click or press return key the record is saved. Step 1: please go to File then > Close the form Step 2 : go to " 5.Document" then > View to view your data entered. Step 3: go to "6. Export Data" chose from the drop menu Excel then follow on screen guide. Step 4: your file will be exported to Excel where your original rec.file is located.
Please let me know if I misunderstood your request and hoping this will help.
Best wishes

Good Day,
I have been searching the archived emails and help offerings to try to solve this problem and I have not been able to find the help I am looking for.
I am presently running EpiData 3.1 with Windows Vista.
I have created a questionnaire and loaded the values for the questionnaire. I clicked on the "Enter Data" button. I entered my data. Now, the only menu buttons I have at the top of the screen are the following: "FILE", "GOTO", "FILTER", "WINDOW", "HELP". Nowhere in any of these drop-down menus is the option to either save the data I have entered, or to export it (preferably to Excel) so that it can be saved there.
Please advise. Thank you!

The easy way to do this is to set the starting point for the <autoid> to say 1 for the first entry person and to 10000 for the next etc.. Then there would never be a problem.
The default starting for id numbers is set in options. Alternatively you can change it manually for the first record in each file and then distribute the files.

EpiData does not allow simultaneous use on a network. I have generally assigned unique numbers (studyid) before data entry and the ID is entered by the clerk. Each person doing data entry is given a unique set of study IDs to use.
Alternatives:
a) Set the starting automatic ID at 100, 200, 300, etc for additional data entry clerks.
b) Let each data entry clerk use ID numbers starting at 1, but add a field that indicates the data entry set.
In both situations, the data entry clerk MUST transcribe the resulting ID to the paper copy.
We do this often in our training sessions where each of the students enters part of the data.
