RE: [EpiData-list] problems in the installation
Hi Claudio,
Is this line:
"c:\Documents and settings\Claudio\Configurações locais\Dados de aplicativos\epidataentryclient\epidataentryclient.cfg"
exactly what you got from the software error message window?
If so, it could be because Epidata doesn't support accents such as " õ " in the path to the file (or doesn't support the double back-slah " \ " ??)
Perhaps could you try saving your projet directly under "c:\Documents and settings\Claudio"

Hello.
I am very grateful the team of Epidata I am having problems in the installation of the Epidata mananger. I complete the installation without problems. In the moment of saving my project he/she appears the following message:
Unable to criate flie "c:\Documents and settings\Claudio\Configurações locais\Dados de aplicativos\epidataentryclient\epidataentryclient.cfg" With options Press Ok to ignore and risk data corruption Press Cancel to kil the program
I use Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3
Can anyone please help me?
Tanks a lot.

to this should be added. Try to install your software in:
"c:\Documents and settings\Claudio\epidata but it might not help since the error is related to where the software writes the cfg file.
So before releasing v1.01 we will re-consider where files are placed.

Dear Epidata list
I have two questions for you:
1. How can i get an overview of my records?(a list accessable with in the epidata manager or entery client. 2. In epidata when i export to stata the data in stata turns out different from what i want. A. My string variables are in s207% format leaving them extremely wide. I have specified length in epidata to 25 (as i want a 25 character entry) B. I have some integer variables that i have labeled, the length of the integer variables are 2 (-9 to 8) these are labeled for readability in stata. Some of the labels such as male / female are longer than 2 but i am not allowed to change the length of the integer variables to above 2. So when I export to stata my labels are ma (male) and fe (female).
What am i doing wrong?
lars
Explanation to Lars: 1. We will implement a grid view function, such as the one shown now in EntryClient with the find dialog
2. This is an error and a problem
When we export data from a string field which is UTF8 - it is not simple to calculate the length after conversion to some other character representation. Therefore all the fields are length 207 after export. We could experiment with a shorter export length.
Until other solution do the following: a. export to Stata b. read the dta file into Stata c. compres (run this command in Stata)

Hi Lars,
I've had the same issue when exporting value labels to Stata. When you "browse" or "list" in Stata, the number of letters displayed is limited to the length of the field. However, you should be able to see the entire label (unless it's very long) when you use the "tabulate" command.
When you use the "describe" command you'll find that the display format of your gender variable is 2 characters, e.g. %2.0f. You need to increase the length of your display format. I've written a very short ado file to do this (attached) for all variables in your data set that have a value label attached. For each variable it ascertains the length of your longest label, e.g. for gender labelled "male" and "female" it is 6. It then changes the display format so that up to 6 characters are displayed.
The syntax is: diformat var1 var2 where var1 is the first variable in the dataset and var2 is the last.

Suzanna and Jens Thank you! Now it works great. I found that i have to run the diformat command for each labeled variable to get it right. Dont know why. But a do file takes care of that. This is brilliant! lars

Dear List
When i have label a variable, but want to delete the label Epidata v1.0 on MacOSX chrashes. Has anyone else experienced this?
lars
Dear List When trying to move variables around in the epidata manager to get a better epidata entry the variables jump randomly around. If i want to move them downwards (hold the mouse butten down, and drag to new possion) the variable will 50% of the times move to a 'random' possision Up or down from where i want to put it.
Using Eipidata v1.0 on Mac OSX.
I have adressed this before, and it got a bit better, but now its really frustrating again. And while we are at it. A 'grid' as a background in the manager would be helpfull when designing the entery client layout.
Just my two cents.
lars
What you could try is to see whether "Autosnap Fields" is set to on or off
1. Start Manager 2. Go to settings (Edit in the main menu) 3. Look in "Visual Design" for autosnap.
4. See if you replicate the behaviour described with and without using the autosnap. 5. Report experience to the list

Dear Jens
I did as you said, but thats a no go to. Now i cannot move variables down at all. Their stuck on the limit between normal screen and the new area after: automatic extension.
So still frustrated.
Maybe a possibility to manual enter the x and y coordinates to a field so that it would be possible to manuale 'place' fields where you want them.

I tried switching to a larger monitor, where the automatic extension was not needed. There was no problem until i reached the time where i needed an extension. My entry form is now complete but i hope that this issue will be addressed in future releases. The program is FANTASTIC and so easy to use. I have and will continue to promote it to my colleagues.
