new test release of EpiData Manager available (reading and saving data structures)
Dear All
Next test release of the EpiData Manager is now ready for testing. Added functionality is: 1. open existing data file (without data) - reads Stata dta and Rec files 2. save data as an EpiData project XML file (*.epx) - this will contain all definitions and in next release also the data 3 read a project file again.
Please discuss function in general on this list and report reproducible errors to the flyspray database
In the announced release plan this is point b and part of point c:
a. Test placement of fields in data entry forms. Move fields, add sections. Only one form is allowed. Edit variable labels (questions). b. Include previous data structures on a form. Will import EpiData (rec) and Stata (dta) files. c. Write data files and export data structures to rec file and dta files d. Start development of a dedicated entry client. e. Add definition and editing of category labels (value labels). f. Add to data forms the possibility of translating labels and questions
See http://www.epidata.dk/testing.php for the operating systems Linux, Mac and Windows.

When you first start the application you will see two sections, which can be moved, edited and deleted. these contain further definitions and guidance.

One additional aspect in the current testing round of EpiData Manager:
Please notice that there can be only one data form /file open at any time. If you wish to view several forms/files at the same time just start more than one instance of the Manager.
Also note, that no warnings will be given if you open a file and have already some structures on the form.
Obviously later this will be changed with the appropriate number of warnings and securing mechanisms.
The idea of the project file now shown in the manager is that several individual data forms (e.g. rec files) can be contained in the same physical file. This is why the file containing data has changed name from data file to project file.

Thanks for this Jens - another step forward! Is the plan that related forms will occupy separate sections and thus visible on the same screen? This is great! Sections can be placed anywhere on the page, which will be great for some applications.

The related file setup will be defined later - after all single file function is working. Ideas and setup suggestions are welcomed.
Whether we should use some sort of tab page for the related files - same screen or other setup is in no way settled. The only aspect settled is that all files from a given project (all related files - or just single files without direct relations) can be contained in a given project (epx) file.
