As you are aware, due to numerous CI's surrounding the use of B Braun pumps for patients in ICUs on hemodynamic support, critical care decided to go with Fresenius Kabi pumps for vasopressors and inotropes. ICU still uses B Braun for volume, blood products, narcotics and sedatives.

FK pumps will soon be delivered to the theatres. Vendor personnel have been on site providing education for us. Our residents completed a session this afternoon.

Unfortunately our initial plan to only have one type of large volume pump (FK) in our ORs did not come to fruition. Issues with a limited drug librairy and max flow rate of 500cc/hr make it difficult to eliminate B Braun from our ORs. Additionally, you should be aware PACU and the wards use exclusively B Braun IV tubing.

As Anesthesiolohists, you are welcome to use either pump. It may be a good idea to gain experience with FK, especially for vasopressors/inotropes so that when we take ICU patients for surgery, the pumps are familiar to us. The FK Propofol dose is only in mg/kg/hr. We will keep a limited supply of FK IV tubing in the blue bins on the right hand side of the medication carts. You can use these IV sets to "tee in" to the B Braun tubing line or to the patient via a short lock extension. This tubing cannot be used in PACU. There are only 2 ports on FK tubing,

Sorry for how things worked out. Having more than 1 type of large volume pump in every OR is definitely not ideal. We just couldn't have the situation where we were responsible for taking over the care of critically ill ICU patients who are receiving life sustaining therapy via pumps we can't trouble shoot due to a lack of familiarity.
