Good evening everyone, This is a reminder that you have a 6-Station OSCE scheduled for Feb. 21 & 22, 2026. Please ensure that you have checked the schedule (posted on Entrada and attached) for your time to show up in the Brodie Atrium. There will be a brief orientation before the exam. You are required to wear a clean white coat (short) with your student name tag. Bring with you a watch (not digital or smartwatch), stethoscope, pen light, and pen/pencil. No other equipment is needed. You will also be given a clipboard and scrap paper. There is no room in the CLSF for coats or bags. Leave everything in your locker. Anything you do bring will have to be left in a bin at the front of the CLSF. You will get your belongings back after your exam session. No food of drink is allowed in the CLSF - water will be available if needed. Note that you will be in an enclosed space with other people - please refrain from wearing a lot of scent as some people are allergic. This includes perfume, cologne, body spray, etc. DO NOT BE LATE! Late arrivals will not be accommodated. CLSF procedure: 1. We will give you your username on your scrap paper - there is no password 2. Scenarios will still be on the doors - both inside and outside. 3. For all stations, you will log in to the computer, then turn and read, then enter the room. * All will be told to you in overhead prompts * Up to 1 minute to log in * 2 minutes to read * Everyone will enter the rooms at the same time * 10 minutes in the room * 2-minute warning * Prompt to exit and move to the next station 4. When you exit your station, you will move to the next room and log in to the computer. Then you will stand with your back to the door until the prompt to turn and read. 5. There will be instructions next to the laptops as well for logging in: 6. There will also be a countdown clock in each room Step 1: Click on blue button "Login" Step 2: Type in your UM username Step 3: Click OK Track staff will monitor the computers and assist where needed. Make sure you complete the Shared Health screening tool before you come to campus (https://sharedhealthmb.ca/covid19/screening-tool/). Let us know ASAP if you have answered yes to any of the questions and cannot come to the exam. It is assumed that if you enter campus you have answered no to all the screening questions. You require your ID swipe card to enter at any of the card access doors on the Bannatyne Campus on Saturday and Sunday. We will have masks available at sign in if anyone wants one, but masks are no longer mandatory. __________________________________________________________________________________________ 1. Setup: You, the, SP and the examiner will be in the room. However please remember to speak loud enough for the examiner to hear. This is also important for the microphones that are used in the room. 2. Physical examination: SPs have the option to wear masks and if they do, to remove them for examination a) Should you need to perform a component of your physical exam that looks at the mouth/throat and the SP does not wish to remove their mask, please inform the examiner what you would have the SP do, and what you are looking for. b) Everything else should be demonstrated (with the exception of intimate exams). General Comments: 1. Please read the prompt carefully. 2. Try to keep to a systematic approach to your history and physical exams. You guys have been practicing a lot, so keep it up! MMSA Spring Student Initiative Grants

Hi everyone, I'm excited to announce the second round of the Student Initiative Grant (SIG) program for this academic year. The SIG program is an MMSA administered program that aims to fund new and exciting initiatives and projects developed by students. The ideal SIG application pitches an initiative that is creative, has the potential to benefit all four medicine classes, and has goals that are not already met by an existing program/event. The maximum amount that may be requested for a SIG application is $1000. Please see attached the SIG guidelines and application form for more information. The deadline for applications for this round of SIGs will be Saturday February 28, 2026 at 11:59 pm CST. Within a few weeks of the deadline, applications will be assessed by a SIG committee consisting of myself, the MMSA treasurers, and a few other MMSA council members. Possible outcomes for a SIG application include receiving full funding, partial funding, or rejection. Canadian Queer Medical Students Association (CQMSA)

Good afternoon, The Canadian Queer Medical Students Association (CQMSA) is a national organization that connects and advocates for 2SLGBTQ+ medical students across Canada. One of the ways we do this is through our Steering Committee, which brings together student representatives from each Canadian medical school to share experiences, support advocacy efforts, and help guide CQMSA's national work. We are currently seeking a medical student from the University of Manitoba to serve as the school's CQMSA representative. The role involves attending one virtual Steering Committee meeting per month (approximately one hour) and acting as a liaison between CQMSA and the UManitoba medical student community. Representatives are also welcome to take on or join any additional involvement in projects or advocacy initiatives they are interested in. Rusty left behind a legacy of hard work, positivity, and giving back. Each year, beginning in 2020-2021, one award of $500 will be offered to an undergraduate student who: (1) Is enrolled full-time in the first or second year of study in the Undergraduate Medical Education Program at the University of Manitoba (2) Is in good standing (3) Has shown qualities that "Rusty," was well known and respected for: compassion and friendliness to others; volunteerism; and dedication to others Candidates will be required to submit an application package to the awards committee: i. Hey everyone, Now that the mock has passed we want to share the practice stations<https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/1GfYn9tLc4NSCSvpirYzIbV2PNZOUz-sN?us…> with you all. Please note a few things - * The station prompts and checklists are separate documents so anyone who didn't get the chance to participate in the mock OSCE may choose to use them for practice if you'd like. * These stations were made by us and Maddie Hamilton (an M3 student) and do not necessarily reflect the actual checklists preceptors use on the OSCE. * The neuro station in particular was made based off your WGS slides and SGS notes. If you find any discrepancies between what's in the checklist and what you were actually taught, go with what you were taught. * During the mock OSCE we received a number of questions about what level of detail is actually expected on the OSCE. Our advice is that more detail is always better than less and that this test is meant for you to show you really know the details of what you've been taught. Generally, the idea is to speak in plain language when talking directly to your SP, then to "think out loud" in the more technical language to show the invigilator the exact details of what you're doing. * For example, if you're going to listen to the heart and you just tell the SP "I'm going to listen to your heart", the invigilator would have to guess as to what you're listening for. If you say "I'm going to listen to the heart for S1 and S2 as well as any abnormal sounds like murmurs, S3, S4, clicks, or rubs." that tells the invigilator exactly what you're listening for. Same goes for anatomical landmarks - if you're doing something that requires being in a specific area, you're expected to say exactly what that area is. * There are a ton of little details to learn but it's all there in your WGS and SGS notes. There's also a great resource that was created by students a couple years ago, which you can find here<https://drive.google.com/file/d/1Le8Trq6TiCGmKagZjvWL4V7pl9ofQ1Cl/view?usp=…>. Please note a couple important caveats: * This covers both CS1 and CS2 - there's a lot that won't be relevant to you so you can skip past those exams. * The clinical skills course has changed quite a bit since this was written. For the exams that are relevant to you, there will likely still be components that look different. If you do use this, please make sure to do so in conjunction with your actual course notes, as the current course notes reflect the skills that will be marked on your OSCE. Applications are now open for "Ndinawemaaganag" a unique opportunity to participate in an interprofessional community engagement experience within a rural or remote Indigenous community in summer 2026. Ndinawemaaganag (All my relations) Summer 2026 – Fill out form<https://forms.office.com/r/ZkDAAS6ShJ> The program was named Ndinawemaaganag by Elder Margaret Lavallee and translates to “All My Relations.” This meaning speaks to the connections the students make with the community, each other, and the land and guides the interprofessional and social accountability opportunities within this program for Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. The experiences are all directed by the community partners to provide opportunities for students to learn about their community, its people, and health and well-being. Some of the experiences are anchored in a Sundance ceremony, while others include opportunities to spend time in their nursing stations and health centres. All experiences include land based experiences. Some experiences involve camping with the community while in others, students will stay in cabins on the water (and in some you'll do both!). All communities have road access, however in some scenarios students may fly. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations, ceremonial contributions etc) are covered by the RBC Experiential Learning Travel Fund. Sundances:<https://news.umanitoba.ca/sundances-offer-students-crash-course-in-culture/> For the various sundances, we play important helper roles (picking/preparing medicines, cutting trees, building the lodge, helping the kitchen staff with communal meals, assisting with cleanup). In most cases we camp with the community, however there is an option to commute to the Blacksmith Sundance (near Spruce Woods) or stay in a hotel in The Pas for the Opaskwayak. Ideally students will be available from early Friday morning to help build with lodge and then Saturday and Sunday to support/observe/participate in other ceremonies within the sundance. * Blacksmith Sundance (Spruce Woods): June 11–14, 2026 * Opaskwayak Sundance (OCN/The Pas): July 2–5, 2026 * Shallow Bay Sundance (Grand Rapids): July 9–12, 2026 * York Landing Sundance (York Landing) August 6-9, 2026 * Sakitowin Sundance (Cross Lake/Pimicikamak): August 20–23, 2026 * Two Spirit Sundance (Near Portage): To be confirmed Longer community experiences: There are communities offering one or two-week opportunities: Norway House: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend time in the newly built Health Centre of Excellence, in community programing, and in land-based experiences. Expect to spend time on and around the water and to be in ceremony. Students will be in community for the Indigenous Peoples day. Accommodations are a cabin on the water. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available to accommodate clinical/academic schedules. Grand Rapids: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend the first week at the nursing station and with the community health programs. The weekend will spent at the Shallow Bay sundance. Week two is scheduled based on opportunities available and student preference (may involve the nursing station, a land based camp, treaty days etc). Accommodations are a cabin on the water during the week and camping on the weekend. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Tobacco camp (SERDC)<https://serdc.mb.ca/health/commercial-tobacco-reduction-strategy> in the Whiteshell: Students will be helpers at a camp for youth where the focus is to provide smoking cessation strategies, teachings re: traditional uses of tobacco/cultural practices, and harm reduction/health promotion strategies. Youth come from the communities in the South East Region to Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell; students will stay in cabins. Norway House Cree Nation: June 15-26, 2026 Grand Rapids: July 6-17, 2026 Tobacco Camp: August 10-14, 2026 (anticipated, not yet confirmed) Why is this being offered? The RFHS is committed to offering interprofessional education to enhance the provision of integrated care, and is dedicated to actively building and enhancing partnerships to contribute to the communities it serves, including Indigenous Health partnerships, for collaborative care. What costs will be covered? Costs for students’ travel, food and accommodations will be covered by the RBC Health Sciences Student Travel Initiative. What is the deadline to apply? The first deadline to apply will be Monday April 6th at which point Lisa will begin confirming matches. The application will continue to stay open as long as spaces remain for students. Where will students stay? How will they get there? Depending on the experience, students will either stay in the professional accommodations at the health centre, a hotel, or a cabin in the area. If attending a sundance it is likely you will camp with the community. Camping equipment is available if needed. Students will either fly or drive to the experience; carpooling will occur where possible. Will students receive credit for this experience? In most cases these experiences do not contribute to a specific course. For UGME students, the experience is approved as an “Early Exposure” if the hour requirement is met. Who can apply? Students enrolled in the health profession programs in any of the five Colleges of the RFHS who have completed at least one term of their program are eligible are prioritized. With each ceremony done, there were many lessons to be learned, but one important lesson was how well the non-pharmacological intervention assisted the Indigenous people in healing and coping with their grief. These ceremonies were beautiful and moving, and I felt honored to be a part of them. The value of such spiritual practice was clear to me and helped show me that there is a great need for our society to support people to look after their own and their community’s spiritual wellbeing. This weekend was one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my time at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. There were many powerful learnings that I would have never experienced inside a classroom nor reading through books. It was evident to me that a sense of belonging in community, language, culture and traditions have a huge role to play in healing. If you are considering this experience but are on the fence, just go for it… this experience has been one of the most valuable to me as a person and professional, as it has given me insight into Indigenous culture, health care in the North, and interprofessional practice that I could not have gotten anywhere else. [Text reads "Office of Professionalism Newsletter."] Max Rady College of Medicine | Rady Faculty of Health Sciences Supporting professional, accountable and respectful learning environments Message from the Office of Professionalism Welcome to our first quarterly update from the Office of Professionalism (OP) for the Max Rady College of Medicine. Our goal is to foster learning and working environments rooted in respect, accountability and compassion. In this issue, we highlight key activities, upcoming opportunities and resources available to support you as learners and emerging professionals. We are here to help navigate concerns that may arise in your learning environment. [Illustration of a stack of papers.] What we've been working on Policy and guideline updates Consultations on the revised Prevention of Learner Mistreatment Guideline and the new Professional Unsuitability By-Law with student groups are complete. We hosted two lunch sessions with UGME, MPAS and Genetic Counselors. For residents, we hosted four sessions over Teams. Thank you to those who participated. Your feedback was immensely helpful in shaping the revisions. Learning environment assessments The Office of Professionalism collaborates with PGME, PGME Student Affairs, Office of Human Rights and Conflict Resolution, and the Office of Equity, Access, and Participation to complete assessments of the learning environments in all post graduate medical education programs in the Max Rady College of Medicine. The purpose of these assessments is: * To identify programs where additional intervention, assistance or feedback is needed to improve the learning environment for PGME residents. * To connect directly with residents for education about the processes for reporting learner mistreatment. * To inform accreditation preparation. In the last quarter (October-December 2025), our office conducted Learning Environment Assessments for seven programs. Speak Up - "Speak Up Button" An immediate, accessible way to report concerns related to professionalism and mistreatment. Submissions can be made confidentially or anonymously and are routed to the staff within the Office of Professionalism. Mistreatment - End-of-rotation evaluation in Entrada A reporting option embedded within the routine evaluation process. Learners can document experiences of mistreatment, discrimination, harassment or unprofessional behavior when submitting their end-of-rotation evaluations in Entrada. Ad hoc - Direct contact with the Office of Professionalism Learners, staff, or faculty may reach out directly to any member of the Office of Professionalism to discuss concerns, seek advice or initiate a report. This is suitable for both informal consultation and formal reporting. Referral - Third-party referral to the Office of Professionalism A colleague, supervisor, faculty member or other individual may refer a concern to the Office of Professionalism on someone else's behalf. This pathway is often used when the reporter prefers not to engage directly or when a bystander observes an issue. Case file examples Preamble The following case file examples are drawn from real reports received by the Office of Professionalism. All information has been fully de-identified to protect the privacy of learners, faculty and staff. Details have been summarized and anonymized, and examples are shared solely for educational and illustrative purposes, to demonstrate the range of concerns received and the types of responses undertaken by the Office of Professionalism. Mistreatment report Following an end-of-rotation evaluation in which a learner disclosed an experience of sexual violence, the office contacted the reporter to ask whether they would be willing to meet to discuss the situation further. During this meeting, details were clarified and the reporter's goals were identified. The reporter was also offered support and information about additional resources. Based on the information shared, the office collaborated with the Sexual Violence Resource Centre and the Office of Human Rights and Conflict Management to develop and deliver a sexual violence education session for Program Administrators. The session aimed to increase awareness of available supports and reporting pathways related to sexual violence and learner mistreatment. Ad hoc report A program leader sought guidance from the office on addressing a longstanding conflict between two sections. Community-building circles were organized to foster shared understanding and support collaborative problem-solving among all members. Anonymous Speak Up report The Office of Professionalism received a Speak Up report detailing an incident in which, during a clinical case, an attending physician repeatedly raised their voice at a resident and pressured the trainee to complete a procedure quickly to move cases off the schedule. Because the report was submitted anonymously, no additional details were available. However, the information provided was sufficient to prepare a summarized, de-identified account that was shared with the section head. The section head was asked to report back to the Office of Professionalism within 30 working days to confirm that a feedback conversation with the faculty member had occurred. The Office of Professionalism followed up with the section head to confirm the feedback was shared with the faculty member. [Illustration of three people who are connected.] Reporting pathways and support options If you experience or witness mistreatment, there are multiple avenues for support: Confidential consultation You can reach out to the Office of Professionalism for a confidential conversation to explore your options, ask questions or debrief an experience. Speak Up reporting Anonymous or confidential reporting options are all available for concerns involving learners, faculty, staff or the learning environment. Emergency or safety concerns For issues involving discrimination, racism, harassment or sexual violence, we will guide you to immediate supports. Our approach is trauma-informed, multipartisan and focused on supporting both safety and learning. Shantou Exchange Students - joining Class of 2029

Class of 2029, We are excited to be welcoming five exchange students and one preceptor from Shantou, China to the Pre‑Clerkship program starting in February. Until now, this exchange has involved Clerkship only; this year, we will have students join our Medicine Year 1 program between February 3 - April 24, 2026. The exchange students will take part in lectures and labs with your cohort. For tutorials, they will form their own small group while following the curriculum in parallel with the rest of the class. I hope you will help welcome them starting next week by introducing yourself, helping them find their way on campus, sharing recommendations about Winnipeg, and inviting them to participate in student activities where possible. Hi Med 1's, It has been observed that at times that when lecturers are ready to begin - and during presentations - conversations may still be happening in the audience. Socialization is completely welcome while waiting for sessions to start, but please wrap these up when the presentation is about to begin. To support a respectful learning environment for both your classmates and the presenter(s) while presentations are underway, please keep side conversations to a minimum. If something needs your immediate attention, please step outside to avoid distractions for the presenter or others in the audience.
