Good afternoon Class of 2028 and Class of 2029, Further to the welcome and welcome back emails - if you arrive within the first 30 minutes of an exam, you will still be required to put your backpacks and cellphones in your locker. You will not be allowed in the exam room with these items. You can leave them outside but at your own risk. If you return after the 30-minute cut-off time, you will be considered late and will not be able to write the exam and will receive a zero on that exam. Plan accordingly. We will not make any exceptions. Welcome Class of 2029! You have been added to ExamSoft and will receive an email from them with your log in information as well as information for installing the program. Please check your junk/spam folders if you don't see it in your inbox. Feel free to change your password once you log in. Please make sure your ExamSoft and Examplify are up to date, as well as your laptops. On Monday, Aug. 18, 2025, I will release a copy of the practice exam for you to use. The password is welcome2029. This exam is not worth marks but is MANDATORY to complete. The questions will test your knowledge of ExamSoft, Examplify, and UGME policies. I have attached several documents for you to read. Exams for the upcoming 2025-2026 academic year will be on campus. Exams for the Fall term have been uploaded to Entrada with the room numbers and instructions. Please review the Exam Conduct policy before your first exam. Highlights of this policy include: * Leave belongings in your locker * Bags are not allowed in the exam room - you can leave them outside but at your own risk. We will not watch them. Best to leave them in your lockers. Only exception is for approved medical devices that must stay on your person. * Cellphones are not allowed in the exam room - leave them in your lockers. If you are found with your cellphone in the exam sitting area, you may receive a zero on your exam. * Water is the only liquid allowed in the exam room and must be in a clear bottle. If it is a store-bought bottle, the label must be removed. * Food is not allowed. If you must eat during the exam, you may ask to leave your seat to retrieve food from your locker and consume it outside the exam room. You are not given extra time for this. You will be escorted during this time. The only exception is if you have an approved accommodation for food (ex. Diabetic). * You may bring a pen/pencil and non-scientific calculator to the exam. You will be provided with scrap paper that must be returned to the invigilators at the end of the exam. * Religious headgear can be worn during exams. Other head/ear coverings (hats/toques/hoods/etc.) are not permitted. * If it is cold and you want to wear a jacket or sweater/hoodie with pockets, be aware that invigilators will ask you to turn out your pockets to make sure there is nothing in them. * You are required to stay in the exam room for a minimum of 30 minutes due to the exam late arrival period. * There is a 30-minute late period for emergency situations only. This is not meant as time for last minute studying. Please be mindful of other students if you need to enter late and keep distraction to a minimum. * It is advised to show up at least 15 minutes before the exam starts to give yourself time to sign in and get settled. For the first exam - please give yourselves more time! At least 30-45 minutes. * You will not be given extra time if you start late. * The only time we will give extra time is if you run into technical problems. * Bathroom breaks are allowed - please let an invigilator know and you will be escorted to the bathroom. The invigilator will wait outside for you and then escort you back to the exam room. If you require accommodations for exams, please contact Student Accessibility Services. You must be approved for accommodations in order to receive them. If you do not get approved accommodations in time, there is no guarantee that you will have accommodations for that exam. They have their own guidelines that you should familiarize yourself with. If you are not approved in time, you will have to write with the rest of the class at regular time. Congratulations on your offer of admission and welcome to the Max Rady College of Medicine! While this is a very exciting time for you, we know it may be stressful to consider the financial cost of a medical education. Aside from tuition costs, there will be the added cost of electives and residency interviews along with the cost of housing, groceries, and transportation expenses to name a few. We are here to help. Our goal is to provide you with the knowledge and tools to manage your personal finances during your 4 years at the Max Rady College of Medicine. The College of Medicine is offering a 1-hour financial information session for you and your family. We will review the cost of medical education and discuss bursaries, student loans, bank lines of credit, and disability insurance. The information session will be held on Monday, August 11, 2025, from 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm. This session will be conducted virtually through Zoom. Good afternoon Class of 2029! I just wanted to send a note to formally introduce myself as you'll begin to receive more emails from me as we get closer to the start of the academic year. My name is Maggie and I'm the Pre-Clerkship Program Lead in UGME, which means I oversee the first two years of your UGME program. You will get to know the rest of the UGME/Pre-Clerkship admin team pretty well over the next couple of years, but during Pre-Clerkship if you're ever not sure who to contact for help, I'm your go-to person. So, save my information now in your contact lists and mark me as a favourite before you have a chance to meet the other (better, cooler) staff. Moving right along, there are usually a few things students start to look for around this time. Take what you need from this: 1. Accessing Entrada Entrada is our curriculum management system, where you will access your personalized calendars, course/learning event objectives and resources, attendance records, other materials and program evaluation surveys. You will use this system for all 4 years of your program. * Entrada can be accessed via the following page: https://entrada.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca (bookmark this!). * Your username is your myumanitoba.ca email address; your email password should synchronize to also be your Entrada password. 1. Schedules * By now your individual schedules should be populated in your Dashboard calendar<https://entrada.radyfhs.umanitoba.ca/dashboard>. Some important schedule notes: i. Good habits. Your dashboard is ONLY way to access your full, personalized schedule. This can differ from the schedule of your classmates for some courses. Other calendar displays throughout Entrada may be incomplete for you, so for now, please ensure you are planning class attendance based on that dashboard landing page. You should be checking this page regularly (daily) before classes and when planning ahead for extra-curricular activities. ii. It's a work in progress. Your schedule is mostly just a framework right now. All the good stuff -- instructors, materials, learning objectives and other resources -- is still being populated for many courses. We appreciate your patience! iii. Changes can happen. Significant changes to published courses are not anticipated at this point, but minor changes can (and will) still occur. Again, please ensure you are checking your Entrada schedule regularly for updates. iv. If it looks wrong, it might be. As part of the Inaugural Ceremony for the Class of 2029 on Wednesday, August 20, we have moved our venue to the Centennial Concert Hall (CCH). Here guests will be able to reserve seats by completing a ticketing "purchase". Please note that there is no cost to tickets, however there is a limit of 6 tickets per "purchase". The following email is being sent to you on behalf of Maryn Woo and Rielle Hanna, Medtorship Coordinators 2025-2026: Hi everyone, We hope you're having a great summer so far! The Medtorship Program is a student-run initiative to help connect new Med 1 students with Med 2s. These Med 2 Medtors will be there for you to provide advice, guidance, reassurance, friendship, and support as you get used to life as a medical student. Starting med school can be stressful and your Medtor can be a great resource to help you get settled. We'll do our best to choose a Medtor who's a good match for you and accommodate any requests. To do this, we want to know a more about you! This survey should take about 10-15 minutes to complete. Your responses are not shared with faculty or other students, only the coordinators (Maryn and Rielle) will be able to see them. Please don't worry about coming across as the "ideal med school candidate". The survey is meant to give us an idea about who you are and help match you with the right person. The questions in this survey are meant to be lighthearted and fun, so if there's anything you don't want to answer you can skip the question. Once you have submitted the survey, the next step is to wait for an e-mail from us with the name and contact information of your Medtor! You can contact your Medtor directly, and there will also be opportunities to connect with them once the school year starts. We are also hoping to include events throughout the year where you will be able to meet up with your Medtor as well as get advice about courses! The deadline for completion is SUNDAY JULY 20 at 2359. Only select this option if you have a connection to the community or have been to a Blacksmith family Sundance. August 21-24 Cree Nation Men's wellness gathering near Grand Rapids. This land-based men's camp provides a mix of large group learning, participating in sweat lodges, individual healing sessions (i.e Reiki, cedar baths), and activities such as making moose calls/traditional bows and arrows. Open to people who identify as men only. August 22-26 The Two-Spirit Sundance is located near Long Plain First Nation/Portage la Prairie. Students can commit to one day or the full weekend. The experiences are all directed by the community partners to provide opportunities for students to learn about their community, its people, and health and well-being. Some of the experiences are anchored in a Sundance ceremony, while others include opportunities to spend time in their nursing stations and health centres. All experiences include land based experiences. Some experiences involve camping with the community while in others, students will stay in cabins on the water (and in some you'll do both!). All communities have road access, however in some scenarios students may fly. All expenses (travel, food, accommodations, ceremonial contributions etc) are covered by the RBC Experiential Learning Travel Fund. In most cases we camp with the community, however there is an option to commute to the Blacksmith Sundance (near Spruce Woods) or stay in a hotel in The Pas for the Opaskwayak. Ideally students will be available from early Friday morning to help build with lodge and then Saturday and Sunday to support/observe/participate in other ceremonies within the sundance. * Blacksmith Sundance (Spruce Woods): June 12–15 * Opaskwayak Sundance (OCN/The Pas): July 3–6 * Shallow Bay Sundance (Grand Rapids): July 10–13 * Sakitowin Sundance (Cross Lake/Pimicikamak): August 14–17 Longer community experiences: There are communities offering one or two-week opportunities: Norway House: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend time in the newly built Health Centre of Excellence, in community programing, and in land-based experiences. Expect to spend time on and around the water and to be in ceremony. Students will be in community for the Indigenous Peoples day. Accommodations are a cabin on the water. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Grand Rapids: Students will have a wholistic opportunity to learn about the community and health and well-being. Students will spend the first week at the nursing station and with the community health programs. The weekend will spent at the Shallow Bay sundance. Week two is scheduled based on opportunities available and student preference (may involve the nursing station, a land based camp, treaty days etc). Accommodations are a cabin on the water during the week and camping on the weekend. Priority will be given to students who can attend for 2 weeks, however one week options may be available. Tobacco camp (SERDC)<https://serdc.mb.ca/health/commercial-tobacco-reduction-strategy> in the Whiteshell: Students will be helpers at a camp for youth where the focus is to provide smoking cessation strategies, teachings re: traditional uses of tobacco/cultural practices, and harm reduction/health promotion strategies. Youth come from the communities in the South East Region to Brereton Lake in the Whiteshell; students will stay in cabins. * Norway House: June 16-27 * Grand Rapids: July 7–18, 2025 * Tobacco Camp: August 11-15 Why is this being offered? The RFHS is committed to offering interprofessional education to enhance the provision of integrated care, and is dedicated to actively building and enhancing partnerships to contribute to the communities it serves, including Indigenous Health partnerships, for collaborative care. What costs will be covered? Costs for students’ travel, food and accommodations will be covered by the RBC Health Sciences Student Travel Initiative. What is the deadline to apply? The first deadline to apply will be Monday April 7th at which point Lisa will begin confirming matches. The application will continue to stay open as long as spaces remain for students. Where will students stay? How will they get there? Depending on the experience, students will either stay in the professional accommodations at the health centre, a hotel, or a cabin in the area. If attending a sundance it is likely you will camp with the community. Camping equipment is available if needed. Students will either fly or drive to the experience; carpooling will occur where possible. Will students receive credit for this experience? In most cases these experiences do not contribute to a specific course, however can contribute to your U of M Experiential Record. For UGME students, the equivalent of a 2-week experience is approved as an “Early Exposure”. Students who complete this interprofessional practice experience will also receive a certificate of participation upon request. Who can apply? Students enrolled in the health profession programs in any of the five Colleges of the RFHS who have completed at least one term of their program are eligible are prioritized. With each ceremony done, there were many lessons to be learned, but one important lesson was how well the non-pharmacological intervention assisted the Indigenous people in healing and coping with their grief. These ceremonies were beautiful and moving, and I felt honored to be a part of them. The value of such spiritual practice was clear to me and helped show me that there is a great need for our society to support people to look after their own and their community’s spiritual wellbeing. This weekend was one of the most memorable experiences I have had throughout my time at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences. There were many powerful learnings that I would have never experienced inside a classroom nor reading through books. It was evident to me that a sense of belonging in community, language, culture and traditions have a huge role to play in healing. If you are considering this experience but are on the fence, just go for it… this experience has been one of the most valuable to me as a person and professional, as it has given me insight into Indigenous culture, health care in the North, and interprofessional practice that I could not have gotten anywhere else. Good morning Med 1 students, I wanted to make you aware of an Entrance Scholarship that is being offered, the Frances Steinberg Scholarship. The terms are very specific and are shared below. You must have an undergraduate or graduate degree in Fine Arts, Arts, with a major in Film or Theatre or Music. If you do not meet those requirements, preference will be given to a mature student (employed full-time for a min. of 5 years without taking more than 24 credit hours or 4 full university courses). If you meet the criteria please email me and include a letter stating how you meet the required terms, as well as your CV at awardsugme(a)umanitoba.ca<mailto:awardsugme@umanitoba.ca> We are under a deadline so unfortunately I will need these letters no later than Tuesday, July 22, 2025, by 4:00 pm. This award was established to assist a student with a non-traditional background who is entering the Undergraduate Medical Education program in the Max Rady College of Medicine. Each year, beginning in 2017-2018, the available annual income from the fund will be used to offer one scholarship to an undergraduate student who: (1) has been admitted to the Undergraduate Medical Education program in the Max Rady College of Medicine, and enrolls in the first year of study. (2) has achieved a minimum Adjusted Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 3.75 used for admission to the College of Medicine. (3) has received either: (a) an undergraduate or graduate degree in Fine Arts from an accredited university in North America. (b) an undergraduate or graduate degree in Arts, with a major in Film or Theatre, from an accredited university in North America: or (c) an undergraduate or graduate degree in Music from an accredited university in North America. If there are no applicants who meet criterion (3), preference will be given to a mature student who meets criteria (1) and (2). A mature student will be defined as a student who has been employed full-time for a minimum of 5 consecutive years without having taken more than 24 credit hours or four full university courses (or equivalent) in an academic year within the corresponding employment time frame.
