Introducing Shared Health SAFE
As we continue our work on initiatives to improve the security and safety of all staff, patients and visitors to Health Sciences Centre, we are pleased to share details about the launch of our new app, Shared Health Safehttps://sharedhealthmb.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=76176e8d6fa5d842d391923bf&id=ca66b2075b&e=22af729735.
This free mobile app, which is available for both iOS and Android phones, is available to all Shared Health staff effective immediately.
Users of the app will receive all HSC Hold and Secure notifications directly to their phone. The app includes a direct contact to HSC Security which allows the ability to request a HSC Safe Walk/Ride, and a personal alarm, among other features. It also offers users the ability to send their location to a friend or family member who can then watch the user’s movements and ensure they reach their destination.

A Quick Reference Guide for the app has also been developed and can be accessed here.https://sharedhealthmb.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=76176e8d6fa5d842d391923bf&id=49b0cbc497&e=22af729735
The Shared Health Safe app is built on AppArmor, a customizable personal safety app from Motorola Solutions that is used by healthcare facilities and educational institutions across North America, including by our partners at the University of Manitoba and University of Winnipeg.
We are tremendously excited to make this app available and are confident it will be an enhancement and support to our existing electronic and on-site overhead paging notification systems.
Thank you to our Emergency and Continuity Management and Communications teams for their work behind the scenes to get the app ready for your use.
Work on Additional Security and Safety Improvements Continue
Along with the launch of the Shared Health Safe app we continue to work to make additional improvements to enhance safety and security on the HSC campus.
As was shared earlier, two Winnipeg Police Service officers will be stationed at HSC to provide a visible presence 24-7 in the emergency department. More details to follow. Staff have shared positive comments about this announcement and we look forward to the WPS officers working with our HSC security officers to provided a tiered response to security concerns.
Efforts have also been made to improve signage throughout the campus, including recently added Respectful Workplace signs that make clear the expectations of the public when they enter our facility and interact with staff. Work also continues to address concerns raised by staff regarding transit stops around the HSC campus.
William Avenue Parkade
Effective Wednesday, Oct. 15, the William Ave. parkade began using rapid roll up doors to help close down entry points into William Parkade.
In addition to that step, HSC Parking Services also recently added:
* Staff card access and visitor scan access to the southwest corner of William Ave. parkade. * Staff card access only at the northeast William Ave. parkade door across from the backdoor of the Ambulatory Care Clinic at 700 Elgin Ave.
Additional improvements to the safety and security of our parking lots, including the addition of roll up doors in our other parkades will also take place in the coming weeks.
Additional highlights of note
* Improved communication of all security contact numbers including signage across the campus and improved visibility of the security portal on the HSC intranet. * Enhanced screening at all access points including soon to be added additional weapons scanners. * Revised hold and secure policy and procedures including employee communication and education initiatives. * Increased security patrols in the tunnels/campus. * Improved panic alarm signage in the tunnels (see photo at right) including a map of where panic alarms are located in the tunnel systemhttps://sharedhealthmb.us1.list-manage.com/track/click?u=76176e8d6fa5d842d391923bf&id=c5beea2a6b&e=22af729735.
