Fall 2026 Workshops

Communication and Conflict: Skills to Build Positive Relationships and Improve Your Interactions with Your Students and Supervisees

Date: September 18, 2026

Time: 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Workshop Description: This workshop will focus on research derived strategies for maintaining and enhancing relationships that are practical and effective. For example, come and find out what research has shown can predict the stability and satisfaction of your relationships with others with over 90% accuracy. In this workshop you’ll learn specific strategies and skills to communicate both positive as well difficult feedback, and address conflict in a way that may be easier for others to hear without compromising the integrity of your message. You’ll also learn about conflict styles, nonverbal communication, and gain skills to address behaviours that get in the way of connecting and communicating, including the four behaviours that have been empirically shown to be most damaging to communicating and building positive relationships.

Co-op, Field Experiences and Professional Development in Graduate Studies

Workshop Description: Has your unit considered incorporating greater experiential learning formally into your graduate program? There are many ways in which units across campus have incorporated discipline-appropriate experiences, both formally and informally, into their graduate programs. In this session, we will explore the various ways in which units at the University of Manitoba and other Canadian Universities are incorporating professional experiences into their programs.

Considerations for Developing a Graduate Micro-Credential

Date: November 13, 2026

Workshop Description: Has your unit ever considered developing a graduate micro-credential? Perhaps a program that could stack or ladder into an existing graduate degree? In this session, we will discuss potential benefits for offering graduate micro-diplomas and graduate diplomas, existing examples at UM, and requirements/processes for developing these credential options.

Strategic Enrollment Management: Graduate Studies

Workshop Description: We will discuss the UM SEM plan and how it relates to graduate recruitment, enrollment and retention. This workshop will also provide ideas on what units can do to help with meeting SEM goals and create pathways to graduate education.
