Knowledge Mobilization in the Health Professions: A Faculty Development Series This faculty development series is comprised of three sessions designed to help you increase the impact of your research using a systems approach to knowledge mobilization. * Adopting a Systems Approach to Knowledge Mobilization (Previous session, recording available upon request) * Creating a Knowledge Mobilization Plan (Thursday, November 27, 2025)<https://forms.office.com/r/wfzTWg6UBE> * Evaluating a Knowledge Mobilization Plan (Spring 2026, date to be announced) Each session focuses on a specific aspect of knowledge mobilization. Jump in anytime – You don’t have to complete the whole series, and you don’t have to attend sessions in a particular order. Creating a Knowledge Mobilization Plan Knowledge mobilization describes all the things we do to have impact with research. Strategies that result in measurable change in areas like health professions education, health care, and public health. Joins us for this interactive session and explore how a systems approach can strengthen relationships among researchers, educators, clinicians, and learners. We’ll examine real examples of effective knowledge mobilization and identify strategies to have impact in your own context. ISME Praxis Series: How Salutogenic Principles Can Inform What We Do in Medical Education (November 28, 2025)

[cid:image001.png@01DC5E0F.1FCF6C40] Join the ISME Praxis Series A special series of talks hosted by Dean Nickerson highlighting opportunities for research to inform what we do in medical education Praxis is practice informed by theory, research, and reflection. The 2025-26 ISME Praxis Series features speakers from the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences who have undertaken research that informs a range of educational practices in health professions education. Each speaker will share an overview of their scholarly activities and describe how that work influences their practice as educators. Each talk is introduced by Dean Nickerson and concludes with a Q&A and conversation about how this research might apply more specifically in medical education. Guest speaker: Laura MacDonald, RDH, BScDH, MEd, PhD Dr. Laura MacDonald is an Associate Professor in the School of Dental Hygiene, Dr. Gerald Niznick College of Dentistry, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Manitoba who is committed to teaching excellence. She has been teaching with the UM since 1986 and has collaborated with many University of Manitoba colleagues to understand best practices in teaching and learning. Her scholarly research includes a focus on innovative strategies that improve teaching effectiveness and learner engagement. She is the recipient of numerous awards for her teaching and service. How Salutogenic Principles Can Inform What We Do in Medical Education The health-of-self practice standard is an ethical requirement for physicians to ensure they can safely and competently practice medicine by maintaining their own health and well-being. Salutogenesis is a model that describes how health promoting factors influence individual health and well-being, including for students on campuses. When integrated with medical school curricula, salutogenic principles can importantly support health-of-self as a competency in medicine. Find out what learners need in their learning environment to thrive, and how a salutogenic philosophy might influence the way we think about well-being in medicine. In this talk, Dr. MacDonald will share insights from her research on the concept of healthy learning within Dentistry and Dental Hygiene, and together we'll explore how this perspective can shape curriculum, teaching, and learning in ways that support the health-of-self standard for both learners and faculty in medical education. But have you ever heard of pubcasts? A pubcast is similar to a podcast but it focuses on discussing a research project directly with the researcher(s). You might want to think of it as a cross between a podcast interview and a journal club. It gives listeners the opportunity to hear not only the research results but also discover the experiences of the researcher as they undertook this journey. With the days getting shorter, the air feeling crisper, and all manner of things becoming pumpkin-spiced once again, it’s also an opportune time to explore and learn. Well, it’s always an opportune time to explore and learn, but there’s something about the fall that heightens that feeling, don’t you think? Equity, Access, and Participation: I Didn’t Know What to Say: Addressing Microaggressions in the Classroom Addressing micro-aggressions in classroom or tutorial settings is crucial for promoting inclusivity and improving patient outcomes. In this session, we will explore effective strategies and language for teachers to address micro-aggressions. By using the micro-aggressions triangle model, participants will learn how to handle such incidents in real-time. Writing a Teaching Philosophy Statement The Alan Klass Program in Health Humanities, Rady Faculty of Health Sciences and the Office of Innovation in Scholarship and Medical Education (ISME) are pleased to provide one-on-one coaching for the development or refinement of a Teaching Philosophy Statement (TPS) during the Winter term with Maurice Mierau<https://www.mauricemierau.com/>. Maurice provides individualized coaching for writing concise and effective Teaching Philosophy Statement. His many years of experience as an editor in academic, technical, and literary genres leads to meaningful feedback and actionable advice. His suggestions are at the level of presentation, style and copy edit, and not relevant to the subject matter itself. One-on-one meetings will take place on Zoom/Microsoft Teams at mutually agreed to times. Maurice Mierau is a Winnipeg writer and editor who has worked extensively in the College of Medicine with a variety of audiences including faculty. His family memoir, Detachment, won the Kobzar Literary Award, as well as the Alexander Kennedy Isbister Award for Non-Fiction. His poetry collections include Autobiographical Fictions, Fear Not, winner of the ReLit Award for Poetry, and Ending with Music. Mierau was founding editor of the Canadian fiction imprint Enfield & Wizenty, and of the online magazine Winnipeg Review. Born in Indiana, he grew up in Nigeria, Manitoba, Jamaica, Kansas and Saskatchewan. He holds an MA in English literature and completed a Columbia University seminar on Narrative Medicine in 2019.
